The Philadelphia Phillies are planning to call up RHP Seth Johnson to start on Sunday against the Miami Marlins.

Phillies will send RHP Seth Johnson to the mound on Sunday vs Marlins

Seth Johnson is a 25-year old righty from Concord, North Carolina. He was acquired from the Baltimore Orioles at the 2024 MLB Trade Deadline in exchange for Gregory Soto.

He was drafted as a CB-A pick, No. 40 overall by the Baltimore Orioles and made it to the O’s Double-A Affiliate before being dealt to the Phillies where he’s pitched in Lehigh Valley for the IronPigs.

Seth Johnson has been solid in his three starts in Lehigh Valley. Over 16 innings, (three starts), he’s posted a 0.56 ERA, allowing just five hits and one earned run while striking out 13 to the tune of a .069 WHIP.

On the season, Johnson is 2-7 with a 2.33 ERA with 83 strikeouts and a 1.20 WHIP over 23 starts and 88.2 innings pitched.

Can he be “the guy” the Phillies have been trying to find over the last month of the regular season? I guess we’ll have to wait and see but regardless, anyone that they have put on the mound simply hasn’t worked so fresh blood is worth a shot.

The Phillies needed someone to give them a boost out of the No. 5 spot in the rotation or at the very least, have that guy not lose baseball games on the mound.

Thanks to Kyle Schwarber, Tyler Phillips got bailed out in Toronto earlier this week. The Phillies came back after Phillips lasted just 0.2 innings which put them in a 6-1 deficit at the end of the first.

Phillips allowed eight hits, six earned runs, and two homers in what was probably his last start for the Phillies this season.

Ranger Suarez on the mound tonight in Miami

Ranger Suarez will get the nod on tonight. He ran into some issues in his last outing, allowing four runs on five hits in just four innings of work against the Braves. While battling through injuries, Suarez just hasn’t been himself as of late.

Suarez has coughed up at least three runs in 4-of-5 starts but still has a solid 3.02 ERA and a 1.08 WHIP accompanied by an 11-6 record in 128.1 innings on the year.

Suarez has given up six runs in 11.2 innings against the Marlins this season, with a career 3.47 ERA and a 5-2 record in 70 innings.

With the win yesterday afternoon, the Phillies improved to 83-56 on the season. They are 8-2 over their last 10 games and have maintained a seven game lead over the Atlanta Braves in the NL East standings with 23 games remaining.

The Phillies trail the Los Angeles Dodgers by just a half-game in the National League and also for the best record in Major League Baseball. More importantly, they extended their lead over the third place Milwaukee Brewers to 3 games in the division standings – holding onto that second seed for the postseason.
