Phillies send Alec Bohm to the 10-Day Injured List, recall Buddy Kennedy from Lehigh Valley

Prior to tonight’s game against the Miami Marlins, the Philadelphia Phillies announced that they are moving Alec Bohm to the 10-Day Injured List with a left hand contusion. In a corresponding move, they are recalling Buddy Kennedy from Triple A Lehigh Valley.

Alec Bohm has been dealing with a sore left hand for a few weeks now. There were multiple reports that the injury wasn’t progressing as quickly as the Phillies had hoped which kept him out of the lineup for seven-straight games.

Alec Bohm heads to 10-Day IL with left hand strain

The team hoped to have Bohm back in the lineup to start the Marlins series last night. That didn’t happen. It was then pushed to the weekend and now that’s not happening either.

The Phillies will look to Buddy Kennedy to provide some help in Bohm’s absense.

The Kid from Millville will finally be wearing a Philadelphia Phillies uniform >>

The Phillies acquired infielder Buddy Kennedy after he was designated for assignment by the Detroit Tigers for cash back in early June.

Kennedy went straight to the Phillies’ 40-man roster to provide the Phillies with minor league depth in the infield. Why Kennedy has a spot on the 40-man roster over Scott Kingery is something I’m trying extremely hard not to freak out about given the fact that Kennedy is from Millville, New Jersey.

Buddy Kennedy was drafted in the fifth round of the 2017 MLB Draft (142 Overall) by the Arizona Diamondbacks.

In 117 at-bats at the Major League level, he’s hit just .205 with a .610 OPS – including two home runs, 17 RBI, and 13 runs scored. The majority of his playing time came in 2022 – where he appeared in 30 games for the D-Backs (83 At-Bats) and hit a homer to go along with a two doubles and two triples. That season, Buddy Kennedy hit .217 with a .612 OPS.

Most recently, he was a member of the Detroit Tigers – appearing in six games this season at the major league level. Kennedy hit .200 with an .808 OPS, including a home and 4 RBI.

Outside of the options above, if you’re an NFL+ subscriber, the game will be available on a mobile device which then can be streamed to a television. I’m not a tech guy so Google how to do that and share the link with your older relatives that probably have zero clue that’s even an option.

This season in the minor leagues, Kennedy is hitting .272 with a .837 OPS to go along with 13 home runs and 46 RBI. With Lehigh Valley specifically, he was batting .295 with 19 doubles, a triple, 10 home runs, and 32 RBI.

The only player that would be a better option than Buddy Kennedy would be Scott Kingery, who at this point, has to be fuming that the Phillies won’t give him another look, regardless of how well he’s been playing in Lehigh Valley this season.

The Scott Kingery days appear to be over and no one can explain why. He’s batting .272 with 23 home runs, 64 RBI, and 23 stolen bases in Lehigh Valley and clearly, the best suitable option to spot-start across multiple positions at the major league level for the Phillies.

Kingery hit .206 with a .815 OPS to go along with four doubles, two triples, 12 RBI and two home runs in the month of August. That followed a July month in which he hit .325 with a .983 OPS, including seven homers, 15 RBI, a pair of doubles and a triple.

He’s the best and really, only option in the minors and again, no one can tell me why he’s not getting a look outside of the Phillies’ organization.

The Phillies are now back at the .600 win percentage, sitting at 84-56 on the season. They are a dominant 47-25 at home while posting a winning record on the road at 37-31 on the season.

Winners of five-straight, The Fightins have also won in 10 out of their last 12 games and with that, have jumped out to an eight game lead over the Atlanta Braves, who are now tied for second with the New York Mets, in the National League East standings.

The Phillies are also tied with the Los Angeles Dodgers for the best record in the National League and in all of Major League Baseball.

That’s important because if they beat out the Dodgers at the end of the regular season, they can ensure home field advantage until the NLCS in October.
