Eagles Packers Brazil Recap Saquon Barkley

Eagles fly to victory in historic NFL Week 1 game in Brazil, topple Packers 34-29

The Philadelphia Eagles and Green Bay Packers started their 2024 season with a historic NFL game in South America on Friday night, playing Week 1 at the Arena Corinthians in São Paulo, Brazil.

After a shaky start full of penalties and turnovers, the Eagles and Packers ended up putting on a real show in Brazil with Philadelphia heading home victorious with a 34-29 win.

The real highlight of the night was Saquon Barkley, who stole the spotlight in his first game as a member of the Eagles.

The former Giants running back, who just signed a three-year, $37.5 million deal in the offseason, is already making it look like a great move for Howie Roseman and company.

Barkley tied an Eagles record with three touchdowns in his debut, matching the mark set by Terrell Owens back in 2004. He racked up 24 carries for 109 yards with two rushing touchdowns and also snagged two catches for 23 yards and a receiving touchdown.

Eagles Offense: Sloppy Yet Spectacular

It was evident from the opening kickoff that the majority of Eagles’ starters didn’t see any action during the NFL preseason.

They started the game by turning the football over twice on their first two possessions before finally putting points up on the next four possessions.

Jalen Hurts threw a dime to Saquon Barkley in the second to put the Eagles on the board.

Barkley quickly added another the second quarter, this time on the ground on an 11-yard run and a Jake Elliott field goal cut Green Bay’s lead to 19-17 at halftime.

AJ Brown caught five of his 10 targets for 119 yards and a touchdown. He led the Eagles in targets while finishing behind Devonta Smith in receptions.

Brown got the Birds rolling to start the second half, hauling in a 67-yard touchdown catch on the second play of the third quarter, which put the Eagles up 23-19.

Packers’ Jayden Reed Shows Out, But Defense Falters

Jordan Love went 17-for-34 for 260 yards, two touchdowns, and and one interception for Green Bay, but was knocked out of the game, requiring help from the Packers’ medical staff to exit the field with just five seconds left in the game.

Malik Willis came in and threw an incomplete pass and then was sacked by Eagles’ linebacker Zack Baun to end the game.

Green Bay’s wide receiver Jayden Reed also made his mark, scoring twice while really being the only player on the Packers to give them a fighting chance in the game. However, the Green Bay defense couldn’t capitalize on three Philadelphia turnovers, which ultimately proved costly.

Decision-Making Costs Packers

In the fourth quarter, with the Packers trailing 31-26 and deep in Eagles territory following Hurts’ second interception, Green Bay chose to go for a field goal on 4th-and-5 from the eight-yard-line instead of attempting a conversion. Philadelphia then managed to run out almost all of the clock on their next drive, adding a field goal to seal the win.

Looking Ahead

With the win, the Eagles set their sights on their upcoming matchup against the Atlanta Falcons on “Monday Night Football” on September 16. Meanwhile, the Packers will aim to rebound when they face the Indianapolis Colts on September 15.
