Britain Covey Eagles Week 2

Jalen Hurts: Britain Covey ‘showed up for us’ without AJ Brown playing against the Atlanta Falcons

AJ Brown’s absence from the Philadelphia Eagles receiving corps on Monday night led to other players seeing a larger role against the Atlanta Falcons and Britain Covey was surprisingly one of them.

Britain Covey set career-high numbers against the Falcons, notching six catches for 23 yards in the Eagles’ frustrating 22-21 loss at Lincoln Financial Field.

Covey, thrusted into a more prominent role on offense after AJ Brown was officially ruled out with a hamstring injury, registered one first down and 12 yards after those catches, making the most of his opportunity in Kellen Moore’s offense.

There were a few other big gains negated by penalties on the Eagles offense too.

The 27-year-old entered the 2024 season with only four catches over his two years with the Eagles. Mainly known for his punt returning abilities (725 combined punt return yardage over 2022-23), Covey could see added opportunities with Brown reportedly set to miss multiple weeks due to his hamstring injury.

Jalen Hurts connected with Covey on several occasions in Monday’s game and praised the Utah native on his focus and readiness to do whatever he can for the team.

Jalen Hurts on Britain Covey:

“It’s just a lot of time on task working with [Eagles WR Britain Covey], and, you know, conversations and reps, his approach, his intentionality in what he does,” Hurts told reporters postgame Monday. “And you know, he showed up for us, and we’ll need him to continue to do that.”

“And I think the most important thing is everybody is focused and doing their jobs to help the team win,” Hurts added. “And, as I said before, to do that, you just have to learn from everything. You have to learn from your mistakes. And we will, we’ll be better from it.”

Unfortunately, the Eagles let their home opener against the Falcons slip away in the final two minutes and lost the game 22-21, dropping to 1-1 on the season. They’ll return to action next week in New Orleans, faced with the tough task of slowing down what has been a high-powered Saints’ offense.
