Report: Eagles release LB Devin White after failed trade attempts
The Eagles have officially released former Pro Bowl LB Devin White, the team announced on Tuesday afternoon.
According to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, the Eagles considered trading White in the preseason but could not secure a deal. Tim McManus reported that White and the Eagles agreed to release him now rather than wait for the trade deadline, which would have subjected him to waivers.
In return, White will reportedly help the Eagles save on his salary cap hit.
My understanding is the Eagles and Devin White made a deal: the team would release him now (instead of after the trade deadline when he'd be subjected to waivers). And White agreed to terms that could provide the Eagles possible financial relief.

The Eagles signed White to a one-year deal worth up to $7.5M last offseason, including $3.5M guaranteed. The expectation was that he would fill one of the two starting inside linebacker roles. He started alongside Zack Baun with the first team throughout spring practices and training camp, while Nakobe Dean rotated in.
However, White sustained an ankle injury just before the Eagles traveled to Brazil for their season opener. Upon their return, defensive coordinator Vic Fangio confirmed that Dean had moved ahead of White on the depth chart. Since White did not contribute on special teams, he was a healthy scratch in Weeks 2 and 3.
Additionally, White missed the Eagles’ Week 4 matchup against Tampa Bay, his former team, due to personal reasons.
With White’s departure, Ben VanSumeren and rookie Jeremiah Trotter Jr. are expected to serve as backup linebackers to Dean and Baun. Both players have limited experience — VanSumeren has recorded just eight career snaps, all from last season, while Trotter has three.
Following the release, the Eagles now have an open roster spot. Safety Sydney Brown and wide receiver Ainias Smith have had their 21-day practice windows activated this week, and one of them may take that spot if ready to play against Cleveland.
