Connor Barwin leads the charge for Philadelphia’s NWSL team bid

Philadelphia is making a strong push to secure the National Women’s Soccer League’s (NWSL) 16th team, with a bid fronted by none other than Connor Barwin, the Eagles’ Head of Football Development and Strategy.

Known for his impressive NFL career as a linebacker, Connor Barwin has now turned his focus toward advancing soccer in the city. His group is not just any team—it includes prominent local female business leaders, celebrities, and U.S. Women’s National Team players who have deep connections to the Philadelphia region.

Connor Barwin’s Vision: A New Stadium for Philadelphia

A key part of Connor Barwin’s plan involves constructing a new stadium specifically for the women’s team. However, the timeline presents some challenges. With the stadium unlikely to be ready by the team’s expected 2026 debut, Lincoln Financial Field, home of the Philadelphia Eagles, is being considered as a temporary venue.

Not to mention the fact that most people in the city seem to hate the idea of the 76ers getting a new stadium in Chinatown. If the people hate that idea, I can’t imagine they’ll pony up for a women’s soccer team. It’s just the truth.

This is not the first time the city has seen professional women’s soccer. Philadelphia previously hosted the Independence, a Women’s Professional Soccer (WPS) team that played from 2010 until the league folded after the 2011 season. The Independence had a loyal, though modest, following, with games drawing around 2,000 to 3,000 fans at their West Chester and Widener locations. Despite reaching the championship twice, they were unable to clinch a title.

While Connor Barwin’s vision for a new stadium is promising, it raises an important question: where exactly would this facility be built? While some NWSL teams, such as Angel City FC and Bay FC, share stadiums with their local MLS counterparts, that option might not be feasible in Philadelphia. Subaru Park, home of the Philadelphia Union, may not be available, which could make Lincoln Financial Field the temporary solution. Alternatively, Barwin’s group might explore a partnership with local universities or even consider co-developing a stadium with Temple University.

Regardless of the logistical hurdles, there is a growing momentum for women’s sports in 2024. With the rising prominence of athletes like Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese, and discussions about a potential WNBA team in Philadelphia, the timing seems right for a well-backed bid for NWSL expansion. Connor Barwin’s group is well-positioned to capitalize on this enthusiasm, and if successful, Philadelphia could once again find itself home to top-tier women’s soccer.

In a city with such rich sports history, the potential for a new NWSL team would be exciting. If Barwin’s group can secure the bid, it could mark the start of an exciting new chapter for women’s sports in Philadelphia.
