Report: 76ers involved in trade talks that could mean a PJ Tucker reunion in Philly
The 76ers are reportedly in the mix for a PJ Tucker reunion in Philly.
Multiple contending teams – including the 76ers, Miami Heat, Milwaukee Bucks, and Phoenix Suns – held trade conversations with P.J. Tucker’s representation as Tucker remains away from the Los Angeles Clippers.
PJ Tucker Reunion in Philly?
This comes after the Clippers granted permission to Tucker’s agent – Andre Buck — to speak with other teams to facilitate a trade that would give the veteran forward a chance to contribute to a winning team elsewhere.
PJ Tucker was originally included in the 76ers trade that sent James Harden to Los Angeles in exchange for expiring contracts and draft capital. Tucker has only played in 28 games for the Clippers where he primarily came off the bench and averaged 1.6 points per game.
What would a trade look like?
A 76ers reunion would have to wait until at least December 15th. Philadelphia’s most realistic trade chip – KJ Martin — was re-signed this offseason and players who signed new contracts in the offseason cannot be traded until December 15th.
Martin makes approximately $8 million this season and Tucker accepted his $11.5 million player option in the contract that the 76ers originally offered him in 2022, which cost them two second round picks due to tampering.
Even if Philadelphia were to trade Martin for Tucker, the 76ers would need to make ongoing salaries match as teams who are over the first tax apron – like Philadelphia – need to take back the exact amount of salary that it sends out in a trade.
Is it worth it?
At 39 years old, PJ Tucker isn’t the versatile, fiery two-way forward he was. He’s a non-factor as a perimeter shooter and doesn’t have the mobility to guard multiple positions anymore.
The 76ers wouldn’t benefit from re-acquiring Tucker unless another player from the Clippers is involved.
