WATCH: Tobias Harris reflects on time with the 76ers, prediction on whether he’ll hear the boo birds tonight in South Philly
Tobias Harris is set to make his return to the Wells Fargo Center tonight as the Philadelphia 76ers (1-2) take on the Detroit Pistons (0-4) at 7:00 p.m. EST on NBC Sports Philadelphia.
It’s the first time Harris will be back in South Philly since leaving the team, and the reception he receives from the home crowd will be one of the biggest storylines of the night.
During the Pistons’ morning shoot-around, Harris was approached by the 76ers’ media and asked to reflect on his five-year tenure with the Sixers.
Tobias Harris acknowledged the ups and downs he experienced during his time in Philadelphia, noting both the team’s regular-season success and the challenges that came with high expectations saying that “Philly’s always been a place that expects a lot from its players, and I respect that. I gave everything I had while I was here.”
Can’t argue with that, obviously- but that probably won’t stop 76ers’ fans from showing how they are really feeling about Tobias Harris tonight at the Wells Fargo Center.
Tobias Harris on his time with the Philadelphia 76ers:
“It was, for me, a great experience. I truthfully say that because it helped me grow in so many different elements of my life. All the years here, the ups and downs, the experience of playoff basketball, winning seasons, was overall extremely important to me. It was something that, like–not many people know this–but as a player, and as a person, like, this generation–when I was a kid, I used to play AAU. If something didn’t work, I would jump to the next team or things of that nature. Find a way to move out. It was the first thing in my life that I saw through. The five years being here and I do think there is tremendous growth in that and in weathering the storm and finding ways to come through and out of it in some type of fashion and just really battling through it. So, for me, I always say it was an experience that I wouldn’t have changed. Obviously, it didn’t work out the way that I personally wanted to work out or I think that the organization wanted it to work out because we didn’t reach our goal of a championship, but the experience and lessons along the way are ones I would never change for anything and it was not easy as well.” [SixersWire]
Tobias Harris on playing different roles in Philly:
“It was tough, but to be honest, that was what was asked of me as a player. It may not have been essentially the ideal role of what I wanted at the time, but that was what was asked of me from the team and the staff and from time to time, it was something I had to make an adjustment to and towards the end, the last year, I kinda realized that it just is what it is. You just have to be OK with it and just go through the storm and figure out ways to be productive. Once I started to do that, it was, you know, it took a lot of ease off me as a player, but overall, it wasn’t easy. It wasn’t an easy experience, but like I said, it was something that I grew from and have learned from and have taken, honestly, into this new situation with these guys and have been extremely fortunate to be a part of a great group of young guys on this team and a great staff and I take everything I’ve learned about my career into this opportunity.” [SixersWire]
Will Tobias Harris Hear Boos from Philly Fans Tonight?
Tobias Harris’ tenure with the Sixers (2019-2024) was a rollercoaster of highs and lows. On paper, his averages of 17.6 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 3.1 assists on 48.9% shooting aren’t bad numbers for a third option.
But when you factor in his poor fit alongside Joel Embiid and his routine drop-off in the playoffs, it’s no wonder Philly fans have been critical of the veteran forward.
So, the question looms: Will Sixers fans boo Tobias Harris tonight?
On one hand, Harris signed a five-year, $180 million contract that he never lived up to—an overpay that was more a result of the front office’s desperation than anything Harris did wrong. It’s not his fault that management offered him a massive deal.
On the other hand, Harris’ final season in Philly left a sour taste. His performance dipped significantly, and he seemed to lose interest during critical stretches, which didn’t sit well with fans. Add his hefty salary to the mix, and it’s easy to see why some fans felt his contract hamstrung the team for years.
Will that frustration spill into boos tonight? It’s possible. Philly fans have never shied away from expressing their feelings, and they expect maximum effort from their players—especially the ones making top dollar. But there’s also a chance for some fans to take a more nuanced view, understanding that the front office deserves blame for overpaying Harris in the first place.
Either way, it’s going to be a charged atmosphere in South Philly tonight, and Harris will be at the center of it all.
