“INSANE! TOUGH! GRITTY!” Dan Campbell and the Detroit Lions made the right call by going for it on 4th down and for whatever reason, people think it was an incredible play call
The Detroit Lions and Dan Campbell want us all to believe they’re the grittiest, toughest team in the NFL. Sorry, but I’m not buying it.
The Lions have spent all season pushing this “we’re a hard-nosed football team” narrative, but when you peel back the layers, they’re not as tough as they want you to think. If anything, they’re frauds—Charmin soft with a fancy marketing plan.
Take last night’s win over the Packers. Everyone’s losing their minds over Dan Campbell’s decision to go for it on 4th and inches late in the game instead of kicking a field goal. Yeah, it was the right call—because it was obvious.
There’s nothing Gritty about this:
Giving Jordan Love the ball back with 38 seconds to tie or win? That’s asking for trouble. Converting a 4th and inches keeps the clock moving and lets you control your own destiny. It wasn’t some galaxy-brain move; it was just smart football.
But, of course, the reaction has been exactly what Dan Campbell wanted: “Big balls Dan,” “gritty Lions,” “toughest team in the league.” Give me a break. Converting a 4th and inches isn’t revolutionary.
Shocker, the Detroit Lions win the football game:
I’ve watched Jalen Hurts and the Eagles do it multiple times a game with the Brotherly Shove, and nobody’s throwing a parade for Nick Sirianni.
In fact, Philly gets ridiculed for it. Yet somehow, when the Lions do it, we’re supposed to act like it’s proof they’re the toughest team in the NFC. Miss me with that.

The Lions aren’t tough—they’re a good team with a flashy narrative. And let’s be real: Dan Campbell didn’t make that call because he’s some fearless genius.
He made it because if he hadn’t, and Love went down and tied or won the game, everyone would’ve questioned his toughness. This is the same guy who talks about eating kneecaps and bleeding grit, so of course he was going to go for it. It’s all part of the act.
Dan Campbell: “Blah Blah Blah Blah”
But here’s the thing: grit doesn’t win championships, execution does. When I look at the Lions, I don’t see a team that can stand toe-to-toe with the Eagles when it matters.
I see a team that’s fun to watch but lacks the edge to make a real playoff run. They’re good, sure, but are they battle-tested? Can they go blow-for-blow with Jalen Hurts, or match the physicality of Jalen Carter and Philly’s defense? Spoiler: they can’t.
So let’s call this Lions team what it is: a solid squad with a tough-guy narrative that’s paper-thin. They’ll look good in the regular season and maybe even win a playoff game, but when the stakes are highest, they’ll crumble. That’s not grit—that’s fraudulence.
Detroit fans, you’ve been warned. The Lions are fun, but they’re not built for the grind of January football. And Dan Campbell? He’s a showman who makes the right call when it’s obvious but wraps it in a narrative to look like a genius. Good luck when the playoffs expose the Lions for what they really are—soft pretenders trying to pass as contenders.
