Wild: Calais Campbell’s mother killed inside Atlanta home, his brother charged with murder

Calais Campbell’s mother was found dead inside her Atlanta home this week, and his brother has been charged with killing her. There’s no angle to sharpen here. No pundit to dunk on. Just an awful story about a family that most of the football world respects.

Here’s what’s been reported.

Atlanta police went to a home on Roswell Road in the Buckhead neighborhood on Tuesday after relatives called for a welfare check. Inside, officers found 71-year-old Nateal Campbell dead. Warrants and a family statement identified her as the mother of Calais Campbell, the veteran NFL defensive end who played for the Atlanta Falcons in 2023 and is now with the Baltimore Ravens.

Her son, Ciarre Campbell, 41, was taken into custody. According to the New York Post, a man barricaded himself inside the home shortly after police arrived, and officers went in to detain him. He was booked into Fulton County Jail on charges of murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm or knife during the commission of a felony. Warrants obtained by WSB-TV allege he cut his mother’s neck. An official cause of death has not been released.

Ciarre Campbell is one of eight Campbell children and a former college football player at Colorado State. His attorney, Jay Abt, said his client is innocent until proven guilty and asked the public to respect the family’s privacy. That part matters. He’s been charged, not convicted, and the investigation is still open.

A brother, a mother, and an open investigation

What makes this even heavier is that police had been to that house before. Lt. Christapher Butler said officers were dispatched to the address back in April over a possible arson incident, and that there were indications of possible mental health issues with an individual there. Per 11Alive, the family indicated the same.

The Calais Campbell’s family released a statement calling Nateal the family’s matriarch and saying they take comfort in believing she’s reunited with their late father, Chuck. They asked for privacy to grieve.

And here’s why this one lands the way it does. Calais Campbell is one of the genuinely good guys in the sport. He was named the 2025 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year — the league’s highest honor for character and community work — for the foundation he built in memory of his father, Charles Richard Campbell, who died in 2003. His mother and siblings were co-founders. The whole thing was built around family.

Now the matriarch of that family is gone, and one of her sons is sitting in a Fulton County cell, charged with killing her.

There’s no bit here. No hot take. I write about a lot of dumb NFL noise on this site. This isn’t that. This is a family living through the worst moment of their lives, and the only decent move is to say it plainly, get the facts right, and leave them be.

Thoughts are with Calais Campbell and his family.
