Gregg Popovich breaks silence after suffering stroke and addresses when he will return to coaching the Spurs

San Antonio Spurs Head Coach Gregg Popovich released his first statement since suffering a mild stroke in early November.

Gregg Popovich and the entire Spurs community have been thrilled with the uplifting support they have been receiving ever since the news of coach Pop’s recent health scare struck. On Monday, he gave a statement covering his past six weeks of recovery but did not give much else.

Gregg Popovich releases first statements:

“This has certainly been an unexpected six weeks for my family and me,” he said, per a team release. “As we work together on my recovery, I want to take a moment to share that the outpouring of support we’ve received during this time has been truly overwhelming in the best possible way.”

As we work together on my recovery, I want to take a moment to share that the outpouring of support we’ve received during this time has truly been overwhelming in the best possible way. While I wish I could get back to every single one of you, for now, let me just say that my family and I are forever grateful. We’re thankful for our wonderful community, the entire Spurs organization and our family and friends.”

This is the first message or anything we have heard from Popovich as he has not been with the team since their game against Minnesota in early November.

While these statements didn’t give much on his return timetable or the severity of his health, it is great to see and hear that a hoops legend is expressing his gratitude and alright.

Since the absence of Greg Popovich assistant coach Mitch Johnson has been leading the Spurs. Posting a record of 11-10 without Popovich, it is safe to say he has been doing a damn fine job.

“No one is more excited to see me return to the bench than the talented individuals who have been leading my rehabilitation process,” he added in the statement. “They’ve quickly learned that I’m less than coachable.”

Gregg is more than eager to return. Popovich is now in his 29th season as the head coach of the Spurs, making him the longest-tenured head coach in the league.
