Brazil Baptized World Cup Plane

WATCH: Brazil gets ‘baptized’ leaving Rio for the World Cup and apparently upon landing in Newark too

The Brazilian national team flew out of Rio de Janeiro this week for the 2026 World Cup. Airport fire engines sprayed a massive water arch over the plane as it taxied out. A “baptism.”

A spiritual blessing. A prayer for divine protection and safe passage from a country that treats soccer like religion because for 220 million Brazilians, it basically is religion. Five World Cup titles. Neymar on the roster. Carlo Ancelotti coaching. The whole country sending their heroes off to the biggest stage in sports with a symbolic blessing.

That part is beautiful. Respect the tradition. Respect the culture. No issues with anything that happened on Brazilian soil.

Now. The tweet circulating says Brazil received a matching water salute when they landed in Newark, New Jersey. On American soil. Upon arrival in the United States for a tournament being hosted by the United States.

Brazil Gets ‘Baptized’ Before Heading To THE United States. Lovely.

Honestly, I hope that’s not true. I hope that was just the way the tweet was worded and the actual water salute only happened in Rio. Because if American fire trucks at Newark Liberty International Airport blessed the Brazilian national team’s plane upon arrival in this country two weeks before the World Cup kicks off on our home turf, that’s one of the dumbest things I’ve ever heard.

If fire engines at an American airport sprayed a ceremonial water arch over Brazil’s charter plane as a welcome blessing, I need to know who authorized that. I need names. I need the fire chief at Newark Airport to explain to me why his trucks were out there baptizing the competition.

I need whoever made that call to understand that the World Cup starts June 14th, the USMNT is trying to make a run on home soil, and we are not in the business of providing spiritual blessings to the five-time world champions who are here to beat us.

You don’t bless the other team when they show up to your house. You don’t roll out the holy water for the opponents. Brazil can baptize their plane in Rio every day of the week.

That’s their tradition, their culture, their country. When they land in the United States of America for a World Cup being hosted by the United States of America, they should be getting off the plane, going through customs, grabbing their bags, and finding the team bus. Not receiving a ceremonial water arch from American fire trucks at an American airport on American soil.

If the Brazilians want divine protection during the tournament, they can find a church in Newark. There are plenty of them. The Newark Airport fire department should not be doubling as a spiritual welcome committee for visiting World Cup squads.

Newark, New Jersey Better Lock In. Can’t Have It.

Also, Newark? Seriously?

Brazil is basing themselves in Newark, New Jersey for the duration of the World Cup. The most iconic national team in the history of the sport. The country that produced Pelé, Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, and Neymar. Staying in Newark.

I’m honestly surprised they landed safely. Newark is many things. It’s a connecting flight hub. It’s a place you drive through on the Turnpike with your windows up. It’s a city that exists so New Yorkers have a cheaper airport option. It is not a destination. It is certainly not the kind of place where you want to kick off your World Cup campaign with a spiritual blessing, because whatever energy Newark is putting on that plane is not the energy you want heading into a tournament.

The water coming out of those Newark fire trucks might have done more harm to Brazil’s World Cup chances than any opponent they’ll face in the group stage. If I were Ancelotti, I’d be requesting a second baptism at a different airport just to cleanse whatever Newark put on the aircraft.

Time to Wake Up, America

The World Cup Starts in Two Weeks Matches at the Linc starting June 14th. Brazil, France, Croatia, and a Round of 16 knockout game on the Fourth of July in Philadelphia. The USMNT has four Union academy products on the roster.

Pulisic with Pennsylvania roots. Home soil advantage across the country. This is the Golden Generation’s chance to do something special on the biggest stage in world sports.

Four Union Academy products are on the USMNT World Cup Roster while the Union are currently last in the MLS standings >>

We should be rallying behind the Americans right now. Every airport, every city, every stadium should be draped in red, white, and blue with the energy of a country that believes it can win the whole thing on its own turf. Instead we’re potentially out here baptizing Brazil’s plane in Newark like they’re honored guests instead of the opposition.

If the Newark water salute actually happened, let it be the last time any American entity rolls out a ceremonial welcome for a visiting World Cup team. No more blessings. No more fire truck arches. No more spiritual send-offs for the competition. You want to get baptized? Do it at home. When you land here, you’re in our house. Act accordingly.

We have a Cup to win.
