LeSean McCoy says the 2024 Eagles are the best in franchise history, but with no trophy there is no throne
LeSean McCoy isn’t afraid to stir the pot. The Eagles legend went on “Speak” and boldly declared that this year’s team is the best in franchise history.
LeSean McCoy on the 2024 Philadelphia Eagles:
“This is the best Eagles team I’ve ever seen. Let’s be honest here. The defense is phenomenal. You’ve got an All-Pro, almost MVP in the backfield . . . This is the best offensive line I’ve ever seen. Ever seen. In football! . . . The tight end is really, really good. Then the wide receivers. I’ve never seen a better wide receiver tandem in Philadelphia.”
That’s a mic drop moment from Shady, and honestly, he’s not wrong. But let’s pump the brakes before we start crowning this year’s team as the best in franchise history.
With No Trophy, There Is No Throne
The 2017 Eagles still reign supreme because they did the one thing no other Eagles team had done—they won the Super Bowl.
You can list any other team you want but if you don’t have the hardware or a parade down Broad Street when it’s all said and done, then you’re immediately listed at No. 2 on any “greatest of all time list” behind Nick Foles and the Eagles.
That team faced adversity all year, dealt with losing Carson Wentz during an MVP-caliber season, and rode Nick Foles’ heroics to a magical Super Bowl LII victory. They beat Tom Brady and the Patriots in one of the greatest Super Bowls ever.
You can nitpick about roster comparisons, but until the 2024 Eagles win it all, there’s no reason to rank them higher than the team that got the job done.
It’s pretty simple, right? When you compare them to past great Eagles teams, this squad checks a lot of boxes:
- 2017 Eagles: Depth, resilience, and a historic postseason run. They didn’t have the star power of this year’s team, but they played their best when it mattered most.
- 2022 Eagles: The defense racked up 70 sacks, but they couldn’t stop Patrick Mahomes in Super Bowl LVII. This year’s defense feels better equipped to handle those high-pressure moments.
- Early 2000s Eagles: McNabb, Westbrook, and Jim Johnson’s defense gave Philly some incredible years, but they always fell short in the biggest games.
2024 Eagles: Plenty of Reasons for Optimism
That said, LeSean McCoy’s points aren’t baseless. This year’s Eagles are loaded with talent and might be the most complete roster the franchise has ever assembled.
Jalen Hurts is playing at an MVP level. A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith form a lethal wide receiver duo. Saquon Barkley is having a historic debut season in midnight green.
The offensive line remains the best in the league even after losing Jason Kelce.
The defense is young and absolutely terrifying. Led by Jalen Carter, Nakobe Dean, Quinyon Mitchell, and Cooper DeJean, they have proven week in and week out that they capable of overwhelming any offense.
Three weeks remain in the regular season, and this team has already positioned itself as a Super Bowl favorite.
The path is there for them to validate McCoy’s claim—they just need to finish the job.
McCoy’s declaration might feel premature, but it’s not far-fetched. The 2024 Eagles have everything they need to go the distance. They just need to finish the season strong and bring home the Lombardi Trophy. If they do that, we can revisit the “greatest team ever” debate.
For now, let’s block out the noise and enjoy the ride and let this team prove it on the field. After all, greatness isn’t just about talent—it’s about results.
The 2017 Eagles still have the ultimate trump card.
With three weeks left in the regular season and a playoff run looming, I like their chances.
