Get your Eagles underdog masks: ESPN gives the Birds a slim, 8-percent chance to win the Super Bowl
It’s like we’ve been here before. It’s familiar territory for the Philadelphia Eagles and our fanbase. As of today, The Birds have just an 8.4-percent chance to win the Super Bowl, according to ESPN’s Football Power Index.
As of right now, somehow, someway, even after finishing with a 14-3 record, the Eagles have the fifth best odds to win the Super Bowl.

Why do we think this is?
Well for starters, I’ve been fully engrained, (painfully so) in the national media narrative around this team all season. So, I’m aware of what has been said, what the proposed positives and negatives are around the Eagles from the start of the season, till now. Whether it was when the team was 2-2 heading into the bye week, or winning 12 of the final 13 games this season.
I’ll be honest, I could grab a casual Eagles fan off the streets that is fully aware of what people might be critiquing or holding against the #2 seed in the NFC. With that said, let’s start spitballing the reasons for these low odds to win the whole thing.
Nick Sirianni?
First and foremost, I’d assume it would Nick Sirianni being the head coach. The national media always seems like they are out to get in him, and even though he’s proven himself all season as a more than competent head, football coach, they all just assume he’s going to cost the team. Whether it’s because of his sideline “antics” or him making a questionable decision on 4th down.
What I have to say about that is, fine. So be it. Let them doubt him. He seems to always prove them wrong anyways when his back is against the wall. Similarly to the franchise quarterback Jalen Hurts.
A rusty Jalen Hurts?
Speaking of Hurts, if you’re only concern with him in the Playoffs is rust, given the fact he’s missed nearly a month of on-field football action, then I do understand it. But, my counterpoint to that would be the time off for Jalen may actually be a good thing, and given the fact that he’s a very mobile QB, I’d argue it’s been a time to get those legs fresh and ready for the post season.
Otherwise, I don’t really see how Mr. Hurts would be a concern in betting or even backing the Eagles to go on a long postseason run.
Jake, the once make
The only legitimate concern about this team that I can pinpoint is their kicker, Jake Elliot. Who has had a total down year to say the least. He’s made just 78.8% of his FG’s this season, which is well below his career average of 85.1%. The worst part is he’s missed some easy kicks throughout this season; most recently being a 39-yarder against the New York Giants.
With that said, he has indeed proven he has a clutch gene. And as Eagles fans, we have no choice but to back him when he’s chosen to step up and make some kicks this post season. Maybe Jake has finally hit the decline in his career. Or maybe he’s just in a rough patch. Regardless, he’s certainly viewed as an underdog heading into the playoffs and I just think at this point this entire team should consider unleashing the dog masks again.
I at least encourage fans to sport these starting this weekend at the tailgate. It seems this team is laser focused and I truly trust them to handle business at this point. It’s simply what they have been doing, all season long.
