Eagles Defense Taking Hits: Slay Returns, Nakobe Dean carted off in physical battle vs. Packers

Nakobe Dean OUT – We’re midway through the third quarter at Lincoln Financial Field, and the Eagles are holding onto a narrow lead against the Packers in a physical, grind-it-out kind of game. The score might not show it yet, but the story has been the battle scars piling up on Philly’s defense.

Eagles vs. Packers: Key Players, Storylines, Predictions for NFL Wild Card Weekend

Darius Slay delivered a signature moment with a clutch interception, only to leave shortly after with an elbow injury that sent him to the locker room. While Slay later returned, the mood shifted dramatically when linebacker Nakobe Dean was carted off the field after a tackle for loss, casting a shadow over what had been a strong defensive performance.

Darius Slay Returns After Exit Scare

Early in the second quarter, Darius Slay lived up to his “Big Play” nickname with a beautiful interception on a Jordan Love deep shot, a moment that had the Linc buzzing.

Minutes later, Slay left the game with an apparent elbow injury after a collision near the sideline. He went straight to the locker room but managed to return to action just before halftime.

Slay’s been back in action here in the third, and while he might not be at 100%, the Eagles need every ounce of his experience against a Packers offense that’s gaining momentum.

Nakobe Dean Carted Off, Defense Shuffles

The more concerning blow came shortly after Slay’s injury. Linebacker Nakobe Dean, who’s already missed time this season, was carted off the field after a tackle for loss on Packers tight end Tucker Kraft.

Nakobe Dean appeared to be in significant pain, and the Eagles have yet to provide an official update on his condition but ruled him out with a knee injury.

Eagles linebacker Nakobe Dean was carted off the field after suffering an apparent injury.

Green Bay running back Josh Jacobs has started finding lanes, and the Packers’ offensive line is testing the Eagles’ ability to plug gaps without their signal-caller but despite the injuries, the defense has held its ground.

The Packers have moved the ball but failed to capitalize in key moments. Brandon McManus missed a 38-yard field goal in the second quarter, and the Eagles’ front seven has come up with crucial stops to keep Green Bay out of the end zone.

That said, Green Bay is starting to push the tempo here in the third quarter.

Offensive Help Needed for the Eagles

The Eagles’ offense hasn’t exactly provided much cushion. Jalen Hurts is back after missing the last two games with a concussion, but the rust is showing.

Hurts has been uncharacteristically hesitant on a few plays, and while Saquon Barkley has been effective on the ground, the passing game needs to step up. AJ Brown and DeVonta Smith have been relatively quiet, which has kept this game far closer than it should be.

With just over a quarter left to play, this one is far from decided. The Eagles need their defense to stay strong, but they’ll also need the offense to provide some breathing room.

Keep an eye on Slay as he continues to battle through his injury and whether the Eagles’ patchwork linebacker corps can keep Jacobs in check.
