Jeff Hoffman goes full circle, inks $33 Million deal with the Toronto Blue Jays
Jeff Hoffman’s journey in the major leagues has been anything but conventional, but after eight years, a move to the bullpen, and an impressive season with the Philadelphia Phillies, the 32-year-old right-hander is finally cashing in.
Hoffman has signed a three-year, $33 million deal with the Toronto Blue Jays, with performance incentives potentially taking the total value to $39 million.
It’s a move that brings Hoffman back to where it all began, as he was the Blue Jays’ first-round pick (ninth overall) in 2014, only to be traded to the Rockies in the deal that sent Troy Tulowitzki to Toronto. Now, Hoffman has a chance to show the Blue Jays what they missed out on all those years ago.
Side Note: As a Phillies fan, I think we can all be thankful that Hoffman isn’t with the Atlanta Braves or down at Citizens Bank Park South in Baltimore.

Shoutout Jeff Hoffman…
Hoffman’s career didn’t take the path many expected after being drafted so highly. A starting pitcher for much of his career, Hoffman never quite found his groove on the mound and struggled to stick as a consistent member of the Rockies’ rotation. But it wasn’t until he reinvented himself as a reliever that Hoffman’s career really began to take off.
In 2024, Hoffman posted career-best numbers with the Phillies, earning his first All-Star selection and finishing the season with a 2.17 ERA over 66 1/3 innings.
His slider, which produced an eye-popping 45.2% whiff rate, became his go-to pitch, while his fastball averaged 96.6 mph. With a nasty combination of stuff, control, and a killer mentality, Hoffman became a late-inning weapon, something the Blue Jays hope to continue.
While Jeff Hoffman has made strides as a high-leverage reliever, the question remains: can he thrive as the Blue Jays’ closer? With Jordan Romano’s departure, Hoffman will be given a shot at the ninth inning.
Though Hoffman’s closing experience is limited—he has just 12 career saves, including 10 last season—the Blue Jays are betting on his stuff and mental toughness to carry him in the most crucial moments.
“Jeff will get an opportunity to close games for us this season,” said Blue Jays GM Ross Atkins. “His arsenal, strike-throwing, and ability to miss bats against all types of hitters is elite and will undoubtedly make us better.”
Jeff Hoffman joins a Blue Jays bullpen that already boasts talented arms like Yimi García and Chad Green. This trio should give Toronto a solid foundation for late-inning stability. And with Hoffman’s power stuff and success in high-leverage situations, the Blue Jays are hoping he can thrive in the closing role and lock down games for them in tight moments.
The Blue Jays are in win-now mode, and adding Hoffman to the mix gives them a weapon they can rely on late in games.
Jeff Hoffman Contract Numbers:
- Contract: 3 years, $33 million (potential to reach $39 million with incentives)
- 2024 Stats: 2.17 ERA, 0.96 WHIP, 89 strikeouts in 66 1/3 innings
- Career Stats: 23-26, 4.82 ERA, 256 games (50 starts)
- Incentives: $500,000 bonuses for every 10 innings pitched, up to 90 innings.
It’s an emotional full-circle moment for Jeff Hoffman as he returns to the franchise that first drafted him. What started as an uncertain career has turned into a redemption story, with Hoffman reinventing himself as a top-tier reliever.
Now, with a big contract in hand and a new role in front of him, Hoffman has a chance to prove he can excel in the closing role for the Blue Jays and help lead them back to the postseason.
