Commanders Fans Tailgate Ted

Tailgate Ted and the Commanders fans get a dose of reality in Philly

There’s nothing quite like a riled-up fan base walking headfirst into Lincoln Financial Field and promptly getting steamrolled. That’s exactly what happened to the Washington Commanders on Sunday, courtesy of a 55-23 beatdown at the hands of the Eagles. With the win, Philly heads to Super Bowl LIX, and Washington heads home—likely wondering why they ever thought they had a chance.

But let’s rewind a bit. While the Commanders were busy prepping for their inevitable demise, their fan base decided to hold a “rally” at the Hard Rock Cafe in Philadelphia. Yes, the Hard Rock Cafe, that famous local hot spot where… actually, no Philadelphian goes there. Ever.

Meet ‘Tailgate Ted’ and Washington Commanders Fans..

The star of this spectacle was a guy who calls himself “Tailgate Ted.” Videos circulated on social media of him proclaiming that the Commanders fans had “taken over” the Hard Rock. The man was amped, arms waving, voice echoing as if he’d just captured the city’s most iconic landmark.

But to recap anyways…

  • Hard Rock Cafe is basically a tourist trap on Market Street.
  • Real Philly folks rarely, if ever, set foot in there.
  • Tailgate Ted talking about “taking over” might as well have been cheering in an empty warehouse.

In short, it was an epic self-own and it got even worse for Commanders fans when it was seen that their Hard Rock Cafe takeover was actually held in a private room at the establishment that again, literally no Philadelphian actually goes to.

The Game Was Even Better

Of course, the best part of this whole saga was that the Eagles put on a masterclass at The Linc, hanging 55 points on Washington and setting an NFC Championship record in the process. Jalen Hurts torched them through the air, Saquon Barkley torched them on the ground, and the Eagles’ defense forced enough turnovers to send the Commanders into the offseason with whiplash.

What happened to that “force to be reckoned with” promise, Ted? It’s hard to be a force when your quarterback is running for his life and your defense is lining up just waiting to be torn apart by the Eagles’ rushing attack for the umpteenth time.

Gracious in Defeat? Not Likely

The Commanders fan base was pretty loud leading into this one, peacocking around social media as if they’d discovered some secret sauce.

Instead, they got served a heavy dose of reality. The Eagles reminded them that NFC Championship football in Philly is on a whole different level.

There’s a reason this team is heading back to the Super Bowl for the second time in three seasons—and it’s not because the Hard Rock Cafe had a record crowd.

A Lesson Learned… Maybe

As fun as it is to poke fun at “Tailgate Ted” and company, the real takeaway is that the Commanders simply weren’t ready for prime time. Philly’s offense and defense were too complete, too focused, and too angry at all the doubters who thought they were just a run-heavy fluke.

Now the Eagles march on to New Orleans with a shot at their second Lombardi in seven years, while Washington’s fans can book that Hard Rock Cafe for a quiet offseason dinner. At least the Eagles were kind enough to put an end to their season quickly, right?

Final Thoughts: If you’re going to “take over” a tourist-trap chain restaurant, at least do it in a city where someone actually cares. And next time, maybe pick a place that’s a little more… Philly. Because we all know Philly showed up big-time on Sunday—and let’s just say it wasn’t at the Hard Rock Cafe.
