Why the Eagles rightfully selected Midnight Green over Kelly Green for Super Bowl LIX
The Eagles had first dibs on uniform choices for Super Bowl LIX, and naturally, a lot of fans were hoping for a Kelly Green revival on the biggest stage. Instead, Philly is rolling with Midnight Green, and honestly? That’s the right call.
Let’s clear up one thing right now—the NFL was never going to let them wear Kelly Green in the first place.
NFL Policy Ruined the Fun Before It Started
According to league rules, postseason uniform designation must include the Primary Jersey color (team color or white) and Primary Pant color choices. Even if the Eagles wanted to throw it back to the Reggie White–Randall Cunningham days, the NFL’s uniform police were never going to allow it.
Buzz kill.
Look, I get it—Kelly Green is beautiful. It screams old-school, hard-nosed, gritty Philadelphia football. When the team finally brought it back last season, it was like the entire fanbase collectively shed a tear of joy.
But Midnight Green is the color of this generation’s Eagles.
🏆 It’s the color of the franchise’s only Super Bowl win.
🔥 It’s the color of Brian Dawkins flying around the secondary.
🦅 It’s the color of the Philly Special, of Jason Kelce’s dominance, of Jalen Hurts’ rise.
We’ve been rolling in Midnight Green for nearly 30 years now, and if the Eagles win another Lombardi in it, it cements this as the defining look of the team’s greatest era.
Keeping Kelly Green Special Is the Right Move
The best thing the Eagles didn’t do was make Kelly Green an every-week jersey. It’s got that limited-edition, exclusive feel—something that adds to its aura.
If they rocked Kelly Green every Sunday, it would lose some of its mystique but that said… if there was ever a time to bust it out, I understand that fans believe the Super Bowl would’ve been it.
But when you look at these Midnight Green Eagles jerseys…we’ll be just fine
What history tells us about uniform color selection in the Super Bowl
If you believe in jersey curses, here’s a stat for you—over the last 20 years, teams wearing their home jerseys in the Super Bowl are just 4-16.
Not great.
Philly is one of the few teams that have bucked the uniform trend in recent years. Back in Super Bowl LII, Nick Foles and company took down Tom Brady and the Patriots while rocking the midnight green.
That’s one of only four instances in the last two decades where the home team actually won in their primary colors.
- Super Bowl XXXVIII: Patriots (white) def. Eagles (green), 24-21
- Super Bowl LII: Eagles (green) def. Patriots (white), 41-33
- Super Bowl LIV: Chiefs (red) def. 49ers (white), 31-20
- Super Bowl LV: Buccaneers (white) def. Chiefs (red), 31-9
- Super Bowl LVII: Chiefs (white) def. Eagles (green), 38-35
- Super Bowl LVIII: Chiefs (red) def. 49ers (white), 25-22 (OT)
The Chiefs have actually won two of their last three Super Bowls while wearing red, so the uniform trend isn’t quite as strong for them. But for the Birds, history suggests they might be playing against the odds by choosing green.
Bottom Line: Just Win the Damn Game
Kelly Green nostalgia is great, but beating Kansas City is all that matters.
Let’s be real—jersey colors aren’t going to determine the outcome of this game. But when you see these uniform trends hold up 16 times out of 20, it’s hard not to at least consider it.
Then again, if Jalen Hurts, Saquon Barkley, and the Eagles’ defense show up the way they did against Washington in the NFC Championship Game, it won’t matter what color they’re wearing.
If the Eagles end up losing (they won’t), you better believe this uniform stat will be brought up again.
Get the job done. The jersey debate can wait.
