Eagles Uniform Selection Super Bowl LIX

Eagles will wear Midnight Green in Super Bowl LIX— Here’s what recent uniform history will tell you about the color selection

The Philadelphia Eagles are sticking with tradition for Super Bowl LIX, opting to wear their midnight green home jerseys against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Over the last 20 years, teams wearing their home jerseys in the Super Bowl are a brutal 4-16. Meanwhile, 37 of the 58 Super Bowl winners in history have worn white.

If you’re keeping score, that’s an overwhelming advantage for the road uniforms.

Unfortunately for the Birds, this trend burned them two years ago. They wore their home uniforms in Super Bowl LVII against the Chiefs… and we all remember how that ended.

Chiefs Rocking White…Again

Since the Birds are the designated home team this year, the Chiefs will be wearing their road white jerseys, the same look they had when they edged out Philadelphia in 2023.

The last time Kansas City lost a Super Bowl, they were wearing red against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Super Bowl LV.

All Good – Nick Foles Broke The Trend

Everyone relax, you superstitious freaks. It’s not all bad news.

Philly is one of the few teams that have bucked the uniform trend in recent years. Back in Super Bowl LII, Nick Foles and company took down Tom Brady and the Patriots while rocking the midnight green.

That’s one of only four instances in the last two decades where the home team actually won in their primary colors.

Super Bowl History for the Eagles and Chiefs

If you’re looking for trends, here’s a look at how both teams have fared in past Super Bowls when it comes to uniform colors:

  • Super Bowl XXXVIII: Patriots (white) def. Eagles (green), 24-21
  • Super Bowl LII: Eagles (green) def. Patriots (white), 41-33
  • Super Bowl LIV: Chiefs (red) def. 49ers (white), 31-20
  • Super Bowl LV: Buccaneers (white) def. Chiefs (red), 31-9
  • Super Bowl LVII: Chiefs (white) def. Eagles (green), 38-35
  • Super Bowl LVIII: Chiefs (red) def. 49ers (white), 25-22 (OT)

The Chiefs have actually won two of their last three Super Bowls while wearing red, so the uniform trend isn’t quite as strong for them. But for the Birds, history suggests they might be playing against the odds by choosing green.

Does It Really Matter? Of Course Not.

Let’s be real—jersey colors aren’t going to determine the outcome of this game. But when you see these uniform trends hold up 16 times out of 20, it’s hard not to at least consider it.

Then again, if Jalen Hurts, Saquon Barkley, and the Eagles’ defense show up the way they did against Washington in the NFC Championship Game, it won’t matter what color they’re wearing. That said, if the Eagles end up losing (they won’t), you better believe this uniform stat will be brought up again.
