Josh Sweat speaks on free agency after Super Bowl LIX masterclass

Josh Sweat cemented his legacy in Philadelphia with a Super Bowl LIX masterclass, but the next few weeks will determine whether he’ll continue adding to it.

The Super Bowl LIX hero was an absolute menace against the Chiefs, racking up 2.5 sacks on Patrick Mahomes, tying for the team lead in tackles for loss (2), and finishing with six total tackles in the Eagles’ 40-22 demolition of Kansas City.

Simply put, Sweat was everywhere, helping Vic Fangio’s defense bury the Chiefs before they even had a chance to breathe.

Now, Josh Sweat is about to hit free agency.

After the game, Sweat didn’t tip his hand but acknowledged that his decision isn’t just about the paycheck.

“Money’s important, sure, but I want to be in the right situation,” Sweat said, via Jeff McLane of the Philly Inquirer. “I don’t know what it looks like for me now, but I’m happy.”

And he should be. Sweat has been a foundational piece of the Eagles’ defense since being drafted in the fourth round in 2018. He’s still only 27 years old, made a Pro Bowl in 2021, and put up 8.0 sacks in 2024 despite dealing with extra attention from offensive lines all season.

The Eagles’ Free Agency Puzzle

Sweat isn’t the only key free agent the Eagles have to make a decision on. Howie Roseman has some serious work to do this offseason, with several impact players hitting the market on both sides of the ball.

Here’s a look at the key Eagles free agents this offseason:

Defense:

  • LB Zack Baun
  • DE Josh Sweat
  • DT Milton Williams
  • DE Brandon Graham (Retirement)
  • CB Avonte Maddox
  • LB Oren Burks

Offense:

  • OT Mekhi Becton
  • G Fred Johnson
  • RB Kenneth Gainwell
  • TE C.J. Uzomah
  • OT Jack Driscoll
  • C Nick Gates
  • OT Le’Raven Clark

Special Teams:

  • LS Rick Lovato (The long snapper always gets love)

Sweat is one of the biggest names on the list, and elite pass rushers get paid. But if he’s serious about staying in the “right situation,” that could mean he’s open to working something out with Philly.

At the very least, he’s leaving the door open. And after wreaking havoc on Mahomes and delivering a ring to the city, it’s safe to say Philadelphia would love to have him back.
