Report: Sixers could petition for ‘medical retirement’ if Joel Embiid can’t play next season

The Sixers have officially ruled out star center Joel Embiid for the remainder of the season due to ongoing knee issues. This development wasn’t all that shocking given how much time he’s missed already this season. What is a bit shocking, however, is the path Philadelphia could take if Embiid cannot play next season.

Embiid’s latest injury setback has sparked widespread speculation. Can he return to his MVP form? Will he ever be able to handle a full NBA season again? These concerns are now at the forefront for Sixers fans and the organization alike.

NBA insider Keith Smith reported that the 76ers could petition for a ‘medical retirement’ for Embiid if he is unable to play a year from now. If the Sixers pursue this route, an independent doctor selected by both the NBA and NBPA would assess Embiid’s condition. Should the doctor determine that Embiid can no longer play, the remaining portion of his contract would be removed from the Sixers’ salary cap, providing the team with significant financial relief.

Smith clears up his stance on the situation by stating that he doesn’t think this will actually happen. Nevertheless, it might be the only way out for the Sixers if they want to recoup any money.

Injuries have plagued Embiid throughout his career. Having already missed over 400 games, he managed to play just 19 this season before being shut down. Yet, even in limited action, the 2023 NBA MVP showcased his brilliance, averaging 23.8 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 4.5 assists per game.

Despite his injury history, Embiid remains the heart of the Sixers franchise. His skill set is unmatched among big men in today’s game, and his impact on both ends of the floor makes him irreplaceable when healthy. The Sixers must now weigh their options carefully, balancing short-term competitiveness with long-term planning for a future that may not include their superstar center.

One thing is certain: the Sixers’ path forward has never been more uncertain. Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how Philadelphia navigates this difficult chapter in its history.
