Jose Reyes admits that Chase Utley still haunts the Mets, says the Phillies’ legend is the player he hates the most
It’s been nearly a decade since Chase Utley last suited up in the big leagues, but somehow, he still lives rent-free in the heads of Mets fans—and, apparently, their former players, too.
Case in point: Jose Reyes just couldn’t hold back when asked about his least favorite opponent during an appearance on SNY Baseball Night in New York.
Sal Licata teed up the question, and Reyes wasted no time throwing shade at Utley:
Which team or player did @lamelaza_7 dislike the most?

“The guy that I don’t like, we never say hello to each other was Chase Utley… And after what he did to [Ruben] Tejada…”
For those unfamiliar, the “what he did” was a now-infamous takeout slide in the 2015 NLDS that shattered Tejada’s leg and ended his career trajectory. It was brutal. It was controversial. And it only added to the years of torment Utley had already inflicted on the Mets.
10/10/2015 Chase Utley breaks Rubén Tejada's leg after "sliding" into second base. Initially, Utley was suspended for the play, but MLB chief baseball officer Joe Torre stated that "there wasn't anything clear-cut to say that play violated a rule" and dropped the suspension. pic.twitter.com/3JzPj6oegx

Side Note: Jose Reyes is a loser. I’m pretty confident in saying that he wasn’t even on the team when that slide happened so the fact that he used that as his “reasoning” for not liking Chase Utley doesn’t really seem genuine.
My guess, it has more to do with the fact that Utley absolutely dominated the Mets on a yearly basis, holding a career .281 batting average with 197 hits, 39 homers, 116 RBIs and 116 runs scored in 194 games against the Mets.

Jose Reyes can say whatever he wants but we all know the real reason why Chase Utley is so disliked in Queens and by former Mets players. It’s because he owned all of you and wasn’t shy in saying how much he hates that baseball organization.
Chase Utley literally does not care…
It’s perfectly safe to say that Chase Utley does not give a shit about the New York Mets or any player that was on the roster when he was absolutely destroying them on a yearly basis. Let’s throw it back to the man himself on how he feels about his former NL East rival.

More from that interview: Chase Utley seems to love Pat Burrell as much as he hates the Mets. pic.twitter.com/6j5BZuO9jR

So yeah, Chase Utley doesn’t care at all. I doubt the New York Mets, Jose Reyes, or even Rubén Tejada crosses his mind. And that’s the beauty of it. The Mets and their fans will never let this go, but Utley barely gives it a second thought.
Chase Utley joined WFAN this morning, and took calls from Mets fans, including one woman who called him a dirty player.

The Phillies-Mets rivalry has had plenty of villains over the years (Shoutout Rhys Hoskins), but very few have owned their role quite like Chase Utley. Whether it was crushing fastballs, setting the tone with his intensity, or dropping into a post-career zero fucks given mode, Utley is—and always will be—the ultimate Mets tormentor.
