Schefter: Eagles likely to ‘shed more salary’ as offseason progresses

The Philadelphia Eagles have lost several players on the defensive side of the ball, the majority of them being starters with high price tags.

Howie Roseman told us this was going to be a weird offseason and he wasn’t lying. Philly has lost Milton Williams, Josh Sweat, Darius Slay, Isaiah Rodgers, and most recently, CJ Gardner-Johnson from their No.1 ranked defense. Unfortunately, this might be just the beginning of the Eagles’ salary purge.

According to Adam Schefter, Howie Roseman will more than likely, “Shed more salary than acquire more salary.” When appearing opn 97.5 The Fanatic Wednesday morning, Schefty went into detail on what he envisions the rest of the offseason looks like for the Birds.

Adam Schefter on the Eagles offseason plan

“I think they are more likely to shed more salary than acquire more salary. That’s how I feel right now. So, you’re asking if there’s a trick up their sleeve? No, again, I think they are more likely to shed – shed – more salaries, make more moves the other way, more outgoing than incoming, I think.

Not exactly what fans want to hear, but it’s the reality of the situation. As it turns out, the salary cap is very real, and the Eagles are doing their best to manage its impact. They’re not only dealing with the hefty contracts already on the books but also preparing for the significant deals they’ll need to hand out in the next year or two — most notably, Jalen Carter’s.

Aside from CJ Gardner-Johnson’s departure, many believe tight end Dallas Goedert could be next. With just one year remaining on his contract and being over 30, moving on from Goedert seems like a logical decision. Bryce Huff could also be a cap casualty, though cutting him would result in a significant dead cap hit, regardless of whether it happens after June 1 or not.

It’s difficult to predict exactly where this offseason will lead or how many high-profile players will be on the move. The only certainty is that the Eagles will look significantly different in 2025.
