NBC Sports Philadelphia finally goes A La Carte—And surprise, surprise, it’s a total ripoff
Well, congratulations, everyone. We did it. We “cut the cord,” and now we’re stuck paying more than ever for less convenience. NBC Sports Philadelphia is finally available as a standalone streaming option for local fans. No cable, no YouTube TV. Just Peacock and an extra $25 a month for the privilege of watching Phillies, Sixers, and Flyers games.
Sounds great, right? Wrong.
The NBC Sports Philadelphia Price Is Outrageous
Let’s break this down. To get NBC Sports Philadelphia, you need to already be a Peacock subscriber. That means:
- $32.94/month if you have Peacock Premium ($7.99 + $24.95)
- $38.94/month if you have Peacock Premium Plus ($13.99 + $24.95)
That’s $33 to $39 a month for ONE LOCAL SPORTS CHANNEL. And that’s before we even factor in in-market blackouts, which will inevitably screw you over at some point.
Compare that to a full YouTube TV package ($72.99/month), which includes NBC Sports Philadelphia, ESPN, TNT, FS1, and a bunch of other channels. Or even traditional cable, which, while bloated, at least offers a somewhat comparable price with fewer hoops to jump through.
Nice Work Everyone, We Screwed Ourselves By Cutting the Cord
This is the future we asked for, right? We wanted à la carte streaming. We wanted to ditch cable. We wanted to only pay for what we watch.
And now? We’re paying more than ever.
Cutting the cord was supposed to save us money. Instead, we just handed media companies more control over our wallets and got stuck piecing together seven different streaming services like idiots.
Think about it:
- Peacock ($7.99) + NBCSP ($24.95) = $32.94/month
- ESPN/Hulu/Disney bundle = $14.99/month
- Netflix = $15.49/month
- Apple TV+ = $9.99/month
- Amazon Prime Video = $8.99/month
Now we’re paying $80+ per month—for less content and more hassle. And if you want Max, Paramount+, or even just local news? Add another $20 and god forbid you don’t want ads every five minutes. If that’s the case you can easily tack on another $10 to all the prices above.
At least cable gave you everything in one place. Now, we have to subscribe, unsubscribe, re-subscribe, and log into 14 different apps just to watch what we want.
Who Is This Actually For?
If you have a family and need a broader selection of entertainment? This package is useless. Unless your significant other is fully content with Bravo and WWE on Peacock, you’ll still end up paying for other services.
Bottom Line? We Played Ourselves
NBC Sports Philadelphia finally offering a la carte streaming isn’t some win for consumers. It’s a scam. It’s just another overpriced, half-baked streaming package that exists because we let cable die and replaced it with an even worse system.
Enjoy juggling your seven different subscriptions while you pay more than ever. This is the world we created. And it sucks.
