Rumor: Eagles could pull off major Draft Day trade

As the 2025 NFL Draft looms, the Philadelphia Eagles find themselves at a pivotal crossroads. After a championship season capped off by a dominant 40-22 win over the Kansas City Chiefs, the Birds are flying high—but the offseason hasn’t been as kind.

Key veterans like Darius Slay and C.J. Gardner-Johnson are no longer in the locker room, and with other departures due to cap constraints, Philadelphia has holes to fill and not much time to do it.

Holding the 32nd overall pick, thanks to their Super Bowl victory, the Eagles are positioned at the end of the first round—but don’t expect them to stay there.

Why the Eagles Could Trade Up on Draft Night

Philadelphia has shown time and time again that they’re not afraid to be aggressive on draft night. With GM Howie Roseman at the helm, the Birds have a history of bold moves and savvy trades—especially when it comes to the defensive side of the ball.

Look no further than recent first-round picks like Jalen Carter and Nolan Smith, both of whom arrived via Georgia and immediately brought toughness and versatility to the defense. It’s clear the front office knows how to identify talent that fits the system. But after losing several impact defenders, the Birds will need more than just depth—they need starters.

That’s why a move up into the top 15 could be in play. 94WIP’s Eliot Shorr-Parks thinks it’s a possibility, writing on Twitter: “I think the Eagles are more likely to trade up or draft a player at No. 32 than they are to trade out.”

Rookie Contracts Are Key to the Eagles’ Roster Strategy

There’s a method to the madness in Philly. Rookie contracts—especially first-rounders—offer cap flexibility and an extra year of team control via the fifth-year option. That flexibility helped the Birds pull off splashy moves in free agency, like landing Saquon Barkley, who just led the league in rushing during a comeback season for the ages.

With star power on offense locked in and paid for, the Eagles can afford to be top-heavy at certain positions if they keep churning out cheap, high-end talent on defense.

As Eagles fans, we shouldn’t get too comfortable when the 32nd pick approaches. It might be long gone by then.

Given the holes on defense and the team’s love for rookie deals with high upside, expect Roseman and the front office to be working the phones hard on draft night. With the right trade, the Eagles could walk away with another franchise defender and reload for another deep postseason run.

One thing’s for sure—when it comes to the draft, the Eagles don’t wait for greatness to fall to them. They go get it.
