Game Day: Eagles vs Jaguars in London
Let’s be real about the week the Eagles just had. They blew a game to the Rams they had in the bag, Lane Johnson retired on Tuesday, and Howie Roseman shipped out Cam Jurgens on Wednesday.
Eagles Road Trip Guide: London – Week 5 >>
Half the offensive line is gone, Saquon Barkley is out, and now they have to walk into Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and beat a 3-1 Jaguars team that has been punching people in the mouth all season.
On paper, this looks like a disaster waiting to happen but luckily enough, this game isn’t being played on paper. It’s being played in London and I do believe that the Eagles might surprise people this week.
Plus, The Liberty Line is in the building with Phans of Philly. Cass and I have spent the week in London with Phans of Philly, walking every street in this city and putting away more Guinness than any two human beings should be allowed to. The pubs aren’t even close to being drained, either and now it’s game day.
I’m not worried about the injury report, and here’s why:
- 2022: at Arizona Cardinals (Win)
- 2023: at Tampa Bay Buccaneers (Win)
- 2023: at Los Angeles Rams (Win)
- 2023: at Kansas City Chiefs (Win)
- 2024: at New Orleans Saints (Win)
- 2024: at Los Angeles Rams (Win)
- 2025: at Green Bay Packers (Win)
- 2025: at Dallas Cowboys (Loss)
- 2026: at Tennessee Titans (Win)
That’s 8-1 on the road over four seasons. The only loss was in Dallas last year, and the Eagles gave that game away. When we travel, this team wins. Simple as that.
For the non-believers, here’s what the Eagles are working with this week in London.
Eagles New Offensive Line:
This group has had about four days together, which is terrifying. Here’s the lineup:
- LT: Jordan Mailata
- LG: Willie Lampkin
- C: Jake Majors
- RG: Tyler Steen
- RT: Markel Bell
Mailata is the anchor, and he’s going to have to play like the best left tackle in football for this to work. Lampkin is the guy fans have been screaming for since the preseason. The Eagles claimed him off waivers from the Rams last year, he sat on injured reserve all season, and then he showed up this summer and looked like he belonged.
Now he finally gets his shot. Jake Majors went from Texas to getting cut by Tampa Bay to the Eagles practice squad, and now he’s snapping the ball in an NFL game in London because Drew Kendall is rehabbing a knee injury. Tyler Steen stays at right guard, and Markel Bell gets the start at right tackle after a full week of first-team reps.
I’m not going to pretend this is fine. It’s obviously a disaster and the most inexperienced line the Eagles have trotted out in years, and it’s facing one of the best defenses in the league but if there was ever a time for the “next man up” mentality to come into play, it’s right now.
Run The Damn Ball… But With Who?
Saquon and Tank Bigsby are both out, so Will Shipley gets the start and the heavy workload. Behind him is Dameon Pierce, the former Texan with 1,684 career rushing yards and five touchdowns, and Carson Steele, who just got called up from the practice squad. Howie and Nick Sirianni always say the practice squad is part of the roster. Today we find out if they actually meant it.
Eagles Defense…
Zack Baun cleared the concussion protocol and is back in the middle of the defense, and Quinyon Mitchell practiced all week after leaving the Rams game with a knee injury and is good to go. Jihaad Campbell is also playing through a knee issue.
Marcus Epps is out with a groin injury, Jonathan Greenard is questionable with an ankle after not practicing all week, and A.J. Epenesa popped up on the report Friday with a back injury. The pass rush could be thin, and that’s a problem against Trevor Lawrence.
The Jaguar Defense Is No Joke:
The Jaguars defense is the real deal, and nobody should be pretending otherwise. They’re second in the league against the run at 74.3 yards per game, second in red zone defense after giving up just four touchdowns in 14 trips, and second in scoring defense at 13.3 points per game.
They’ve held 10 straight opponents to 20 points or fewer. That’s a nasty, physical group, and it’s going to come after this new offensive line from the first snap. Settling for field goals won’t cut it. The Eagles have to finish drives when they get inside the 20, because those chances are going to be rare.
Jags Score From Anywhere:
Lawrence has a strong run game behind him and explosive receivers around him, so the Eagles defense has its hands full. On top of that, Jacksonville has Cam Little, who owns the NFL record with a 68-yard field goal.
He’s 7 of 9 this year and a perfect 11 for 11 on extra points. Cross the 50 against this team and you’re in field goal range. The Eagles special teams owned the Rams last week, and they need to bring that same energy to London.
Tottenham Is Turning Green:
The Eagles are beat up, the line is brand new and the Jaguars are rolling. I genuinely don’t care. This team has been at its best when everyone counts it out, and The Liberty Line and Phans of Philly have never left a stadium feeling sorry for themselves. The Guinness is cold, the fans are loud and the Eagles are getting right today.
