Sixers slide into Top-6 lottery position after loss to Heat, Nets win over Wizards

The Sixers faint hopes of sneaking into the postseason were officially extinguished on Saturday night, as a 118-95 blowout loss to the Miami Heat sealed their fate. For the first time since Joel Embiid’s rookie season in 2016-17, the Sixers will be watching the NBA Playoffs from home.

But while the final score stung, the franchise may have taken a critical step toward securing its future.

Philadelphia Inches Up in Lottery Standings

Despite falling to Miami, Philadelphia benefited from an unlikely assist in Washington. The Brooklyn Nets pulled out a narrow 115-112 victory over the Wizards, pushing the Sixers one game ahead of Brooklyn in the lottery standings. That shift could prove pivotal, as Philadelphia is in a tight race to land in the bottom six — the threshold needed to retain their top-6 protected 2025 first-round draft pick.

As of March 30, the Sixers now hold the fifth-worst record in the league at 23-51. That puts them a half-game ahead of the Nets, and 1.5 games ahead of the seventh-worst Toronto Raptors.

NBA Draft Lottery Standings (March 30)

From worst to best record:

  1. Utah Jazz (16-59)
  2. Washington Wizards (16-58)
  3. Charlotte Hornets (18-55)
  4. New Orleans Pelicans (20-54)
  5. Philadelphia 76ers (23-51)
  6. Brooklyn Nets (24-51)
  7. Toronto Raptors (27-47)

Remaining Schedule: Sixers Need Losses, Nets Need Wins

The final stretch of the regular season will determine whether the Sixers can hold onto their top-6 lottery position. The path forward isn’t exactly easy, with matchups against playoff-bound squads still on the slate:

Sixers’ Upcoming Games

  • March 30 vs. Raptors
  • April 1 @ Knicks
  • April 3 vs. Bucks

Nets’ Upcoming Games

  • March 31 @ Mavericks
  • April 3 vs. Timberwolves
  • April 6 vs. Raptors

Even one unexpected win by the Sixers could complicate their draft outlook. Every loss, on the other hand, nudges them closer to locking in a valuable lottery pick — something that could help reshape the roster around Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey this summer.

In a lost season filled with injuries and inconsistency, the silver lining for the Sixers may come in June’s NBA Draft Lottery. If they remain within the top six, they’ll keep their first-round pick — a crucial asset that could be used to add young talent or included in a trade package for immediate reinforcements.

With just a handful of games left and a razor-thin margin separating several teams in the standings, the final week of the regular season might hold more significance for Philadelphia’s future than their recent on-court results ever did.
