Kevin Willard sets a new standard in cowardice, held a Zoom call to tell Maryland players he was leaving for Villanova

Kevin Willard is out at Maryland and officially headed to Villanova — and he made sure his final act as head coach was as soft as humanly possible.

How’d he break the news to the players he recruited, coached, and sold dreams to? A Zoom call. Not even a team meeting. Not even a post-practice pull-aside. Just a cowardly link and a “thanks for the memories” over buffering Wi-Fi.

Kevin Willard informed his Maryland team he was leaving for Villanova via Zoom

This guy lied to everyone for two straight weeks — the media, the fans, the players, the boosters, probably even his own dog. “I haven’t even talked to my wife or my agent about other jobs,” he said after Maryland’s last game, which in hindsight might be the most laughably dishonest quote of the year.

And sure, coaches leave all the time. But most at least have the decency to look the players in the eye when they do it. Willard couldn’t be bothered. He hit “Start Meeting,” mumbled some corporate farewell lines, and peaced out for a job he clearly wanted for months.

What’s Next for Maryland?

Not only does Willard bail, but now Rodney Rice might follow him to Villanova, and Ja’Kobi Gillespie might not be far behind. Welcome to modern college basketball — where NIL is king, loyalty is dead, and guys will bail the second the check clears.

I’m not saying NIL is the root of all evil. It’s been a long time coming and absolutely necessary for the players. But when you have a coach slithering out the door and taking his top talent with him after lying to their faces? That’s when it starts to feel like a rigged game.

Villanova should edit their “What They’re Saying” tweet and include Maryland players, students, and really the general dialogue around Kevin Willards exit.
