Saquon Barkley hops on Hot Ones to talk Super Bowl parade and his historic 2024 season
Saquon Barkley turned up the heat — literally and figuratively — in his recent appearance on Hot Ones, the wildly popular YouTube series where guests endure a gauntlet of spicy wings while fielding deep-dive questions from host Sean Evans.
The Philadelphia Eagles’ star running back may have joked about “watching film” to prepare for the challenge, but by wing five, it was clear no amount of game tape could prepare him for the infamous “wings of death.” Barkley powered through with sweat on his brow and milk in hand, giving fans a candid look at the man behind the facemask.
Saquon Barkley Talks Career Milestones and Philly Fandom
While chowing down on increasingly torturous hot sauces, Saquon Barkley walked fans through a highlight reel of his life — from playing youth football in the Lehigh Valley to making jaws drop at Penn State, and ultimately, becoming a Super Bowl champion with the Eagles.
One moment, in particular, stood out to Barkley during his championship season. Reflecting on a snowy playoff win over the Rams, he shared a powerful story behind his 78-yard touchdown run:
“For me, the reason why that’s my favorite play, because (I was) kind of hyping myself up and talking to my therapist and my mentor and coming up with a mantra,” Barkley said. “I was talking to myself, saying, ‘This is it. This is the time.’ It kind of all came together and just clicked for me in that moment.”
And while fans might argue that his jaw-dropping backward hurdle against Jacksonville was the season’s top highlight, Barkley noted that move was something he first tried in high school — just on a much smaller stage.
Behind the Parade Scenes and Barkley’s Philly Spirit
Barkley didn’t hold back when asked about the Eagles’ Super Bowl parade in February. While he shared heartfelt stories of connecting with fans, one humorous moment stuck with him — when he hoisted a team ball boy over the barrier to join the festivities after realizing he was left behind.
“He’s a grown man,” Barkley laughed. “I probably should let him jump over by himself. If I could go back and change one thing, I probably just helped him jump over instead of picking him up like a baby.”
The Lehigh Valley native also gave love to the celebrity supporters of the Birds. He name-dropped Philly staples like Kevin Hart, Bradley Cooper, and Gillie Da Kid as his favorite famous fans — with Hart even going so far as to claim he owns a pet eagle named Saquon Barkley.
“I hope that’s just PR,” Barkley joked. “… He’s a small human being and the eagle is a really strong animal, so I really wouldn’t be surprised.”
Hot Takes on Media, Movies, and More from Saquon Barkley
In between wings, Saquon Barkley talked shop about his days studying communications and broadcast journalism at Penn State. When asked to grade today’s sports media, Barkley gave it a “B+,” noting that while plenty of journalists do great work, the need for viral content sometimes dilutes the message.
“You got to make sure you sell,” he said. “So some people might have sold out a little bit.”
Evans also managed to get a rare emotional moment out of Barkley when the topic turned to movies. While Barkley said he didn’t cry when he won the Super Bowl or even when his kids were born, he admitted one thing gets him every time — Remember the Titans.
“I won’t cry after I won a Super Bowl,” Barkley said. “… But you give me a good movie, I’m a sucker for that.”
From the Gridiron to Game Night with Sean Evans
In true Hot Ones fashion, the interview wrapped with Barkley and Evans battling it out in a game of Connect Four, all while the fiery sauces continued to wreak havoc. Barkley also gave fans insight into his offseason regimen — something he calls “animal work” — and even took a playful jab at a former college teammate over a weight room record.
