Thailand military draft lottery

Thailand’s military draft lottery system would make incredible television

Thailand is so hot right now thanks to the season finale of White Lotus, but what if I told you there was an even more intriguing event taking place in the Southeast Asian nation? That’s right, it’s officially time for the country’s annual military lottery, where 21-year-old guys will have their fate decided by a completely insane method.

All Thai males are obligated to serve in the military, with conscription occurring annually in April via a lottery system where a red card means mandatory service and a black card grants exemption. It’s high stakes, action-packed, and I need it on television screens across the globe immediately.

Thailand’s method for selecting mandatory conscripts for two years of military service makes the NFL Draft more comparable to watching paint dry:

I could not be more serious when I say we need a full-blown draft day production crew on the scene. I need insiders breaking news on Twitter and a team of studio analysts breaking down tape, making comparisons to current active servicemembers, and sharing tragic anecdotes about prospects’ family histories.

I’m still in awe about this and disappointed I didn’t learn about it sooner. This is borderline Hunger Games stuff going on in Thailand.

Plus, with tempers flaring in the region, these dudes could end up actually seeing combat. That could result in some seriously compelling storylines.

Imagine watching a news story about a Thai battalion beating back a Chinese offensive outside Bangkok. The camera cuts to a soldier who single-handedly saved a dozen of his fellow servicemen.

“Holy shit,” you say. “That’s Somchai Theevarit. I remember when he got drafted. I knew he’d kick ass in the big leagues.”

ESPN, HBO, hell, even Tubi. If you like the idea – which I know you do – hit me up. Let’s talk business.

Very real and legitimate journalist. I don't see a loss on the schedule.
