Wawa Ohio

Wawa opens its first Ohio location, officially ending its reign as Philadelphia’s premier convenience store

One thing you learn as you get older — capitalism always finds a way. Even Wawa, once a Philly-exclusive staple, has fallen victim to this omnipotent foe.

On Wednesday, Wawa officially opened its first Ohio location, marking the end of its run as Philly’s undisputed convenience store king.

Wawa is Philadelphia’s no longer

Plenty of people would argue Wawa sold out a long time ago. Once they started popping up all over the East Coast, it definitely lost some of that local charm. I let it slide — mainly because most of those new stores were in Florida, which is basically Pennsylvania’s retirement home. Boomers need their Wawa hoagies.

But Ohio? Yeah, I can’t get behind that. I don’t know a single person from Ohio, and I’ve never met anyone from Philly who willingly moved there. Honestly, I don’t think Ohio deserves our culinary excellence.

Unsurprisingly, Ohioans lost their minds over Wawa’s arrival. They hosted VIP events before the grand opening to give folks a preview, and apparently those were packed. When the store finally opened, people were lined up outside as early as 3AM.

Wawa moving west isn’t a bad thing on its own. But in the grand scheme of all things Philadelphia, it feels… off. It’s not just Wawa expanding — suddenly people are rocking Kelly green Eagles gear like it’s streetwear, dropping “jawn” with zero context, and pretending to vibe with Philly’s gritty attitude. And honestly? That doesn’t sit right with me.

I don’t want the rest of the country to like us — it goes against everything we’re built on. We’re supposed to be hated, misunderstood, seen as the scum of the Earth. We thrive in that space. America is co-opting Philly’s entire identity, and I’ll die on this hill gatekeeping every last ounce of what makes this city great.

My culture isn’t a costume, you son of a bitch.

We have to resist this inflection point. Just because the Eagles are the best team in the NFL and we’ve got the coolest quarterback in the league doesn’t mean everyone suddenly gets to latch onto our culture. Stay away and let us be scumbags in peace.

If you want a Wawa hoagie and that sweet, delicious coffee, make the pilgrimage to Philly like everyone else. Otherwise, your cultural appropriation will not go unnoticed.
