The Calm Before the Summer Storm: Andrew Painter with another strong start in Clearwater
Andrew Painter was back on a mound today for the Clearwater Threshers and every inning he throws is a reminder that the Phillies have something very special cooking down in in Florida.
Wearing those iconic red pinstriped pants — the same ones he’ll (hopefully) be rocking in South Philly later this summer — Painter looked sharp again on Thursday, tossing three scoreless innings with three strikeouts against the Fort Myers Mighty Mussels.
Painter now owns a tidy 2.45 ERA through his first three starts with the Threshers, with 10 strikeouts over 7.1 innings. Not bad for a 22-year-old just getting his feet back under him post-Tommy John.
Andrew Painter: 3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K, 43 pitches (32 strikes)
The Phillies aren’t rushing anything. They’ve been incredibly cautious with Painter since his surgery in the summer of 2023, and rightfully so. This kid is still the No. 1 prospect in the organization and arguably the best pure arm Philly’s developed in decades.
The team has circled July as a loose debut target — though if things click and the rotation hits a rough patch (which, let’s be honest, could happen any day), we might be looking at June or even a surprise late-May call-up if Painter’s velocity, command, and composure keep trending up.
Mick Abel deals seven strong, continues to stake his claim in the Phillies’ rotation future
Andrew Painter is obviously expected to climb the minor league ladder as the summer heats up — High-A, then Double-A, then a stop in Lehigh Valley — before that magical debut in red pinstripes. But the ramp-up is coming. Fast.
And if he keeps dealing like this you might want to start clearing your calendar for a Citizens Bank Park debut around the All-Star break. The Phillies’ present is contending — but the future, with Andrew Painter in the rotation, might be even scarier.
