Phillies add bullpen depth, acquire Daniel Robert from Rangers

The Phillies quietly made a move Wednesday that could end up paying dividends down the line, acquiring right-handed reliever Daniel Robert from the Texas Rangers in exchange for 20-year-old prospect Enrique Segura.

Robert will report to Triple-A Lehigh Valley, where he’ll slot into a bullpen that could eventually see him rise to the majors.

This isn’t a headliner trade, but it’s a savvy one. Robert, 30, was off to a fantastic start with Triple-A Round Rock this season — a 1.54 ERA, 17 strikeouts in 11.2 innings, and two saves before being designated for assignment earlier this week.

He’s got a solid minor league track record with a career 3.40 ERA, 260 Ks in 195.2 innings, and an impressive 11.86 K/9 rate over the last five seasons.

He also got a brief taste of big-league action in 2024, tossing 5.2 innings of two-run ball over four appearances. Not flashy, but effective.

The Phillies have had some bullpen concerns in 2025, especially in middle relief. Jordan Romano has been a rollercoaster, and the club’s depth has been tested early.

This is a classic Dombrowski move — no major cost, no major splash, just a solid arm who’s shown strikeout upside and could help if things click.

In return, the Phils gave up Segura, a low-level starting prospect with some intrigue but limited polish. He had a 3.18 ERA over 17 innings at Low-A Clearwater this year but was a ways off from making an impact.

Works for me. The Phillies get a guy with major league experience who misses bats. If Daniel Robert shows anything at Lehigh, don’t be surprised if he’s in red pinstripes later this summer.
