Villanova alum Robert Francis Prevost becomes Pope Leo XIV, the first American ever selected

Well, Philly, we finally did it. Robert Francis Prevost has officially been named the new pope, and not just any pope — the first American pope in history, that also has a degree from Villanova University.

The First American Pope and Villanova alum Robert Francis Prevost

Philly and Big 5 supremacy has officially been confirmed by divine appointment.

Villanova alumnus Robert Francis Prevost, now officially Pope Leo XIV, was elected Thursday as the head of the Catholic Church, sending shockwaves through the Vatican and the greater Philadelphia area.

The 69-year-old (nice) Robert Francis Prevost hails from Chicago but earned his bachelor’s in mathematics from Villanova University — which now makes Rollie Massimino part of the papal pipeline, whether you like it or not.

Is Villanova officially a Philly school?

That debate just got more complicated. If the first American pope got his degree off Lancaster Avenue, you better believe the Main Line is gonna start printing up “God’s Team” shirts for next year’s hoops season.

Robert Francis Prevost Scouting Report

  • Name: Pope Leo XIV
  • Age: 69
  • Hometown: Chicago
  • Degree: Math, Villanova University
  • Ordination: 1982
  • Can he hoop? We don’t know, but if you went to Nova in the late ’70s and early ’80s, chances are you caught a few games at the Pavilion. We’re just saying.

The big question now: how soon before Leo gets a courtside seat at the Big 5 Classic inside the freshly named Xfinity Mobile Arena? And can we get him in a throwback Allan Ray jersey? Maybe he leads a team prayer with the Archbishop Carroll kids at halftime.

Obviously, this is a major moment whether you’re Catholic or not. The pope’s Philly connection adds a little extra juice to a city that already prides itself on its religious diversity, rabid sports culture, and unparalleled pettiness.

All we’re asking now is for Pope Leo XIV to weigh in on NIL deals, the transfer portal, and maybe explain why Fran Dunphy always looks like he’s coaching with a headache.

  • Has the pope forgiven Allen Ray’s eye injury yet?
  • What’s his stance on Storm the Court night at the Palestra?
  • Can he bless the Sixers before next season or is that a lost cause?

Look, the first American pope going to Villanova is already strange enough. But when you mix in the fact that this guy likely watched Villanova hoops under Rollie Massimino, has a theology degree, and studied canon law and has probably stood in line at Campus Corner — that’s a holy trifecta.

So what does this mean for New York fans? Bad news. The Knicks’ title drought just got spiritually extended another decade. God has clearly chosen the Big 5.
