WATCH: Denny McCarthy cooked on the greens then trolled Eagles fans with Commanders jokes at Philly Cricket on Thursday
Denny McCarthy might be dialed in with the flatstick, but he also brought a little NFC East spice to Flourtown on Thursday during round one from the Truist Championship.
After torching the Philadelphia Cricket Club’s Wissahickon Course with an 8-under 62, McCarthy found himself one shot back of Keith Mitchell and tied for second after Round 1 of the Truist Championship.

His putter was nuclear — McCarthy led the field in Strokes Gained: Putting (4.478) — and once he got rolling, the birdies followed.
A five-hole heater on Nos. 11 through 15? That’ll do.
But he didn’t just turn heads with his scorecard. He had a little fun with the locals, too.
Caught on video by the Truist Championship X account, McCarthy — with a smirk only a lifelong Marylander could wear — turned to a Philly-heavy and asked them if anyone was rooting for the Commanders around the area.

Denny McCarthy. Brother.
You wanna talk about stepping into enemy territory and letting it fly?
That’s it. That’s the move. And you’ve gotta respect it.
Denny McCarthy grew up in Takoma Park, Maryland. He hooped at Georgetown Prep. Played college golf at UVA. Represented Team USA at the 2010 Junior Ryder Cup alongside Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas.
He’s been around the block in sports. This wasn’t a clueless dig — it was a calculated needle from a guy who loves his hometown teams and isn’t afraid to let it be known.
Honestly, in a sport full of PR-safe answers and bland handshakes, it’s refreshing to see a little personality. Even if it comes wrapped in a burgundy and gold joke at the expense of the most loyal fanbase on Earth.
2025 Truist Championship: Denny McCarthy Thursday Interview
Now, would this land as well if the Commanders were good? Probably not. But let’s be real: Philly fans can take it. Especially after the Eagles dog-walked Washington in the NFC Championship and followed it up with a blowout over the Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX to claim another Lombardi. The rings speak for themselves.
As long as Denny McCarthy is rolling in 20-footers and keeping it loose, we’ll take it — even if we’d rather hear “Go Birds” than “Hail to the…whatever they’re called now.”
McCarthy tees off again Friday morning. The game’s hot. The chirps are hotter. Philly fans will be waiting. Just ask Jordan Spieth what happened earlier in the week when they announced he was a Dallas, Texas native.
