Truist Championship: Keith Mitchell holds lead as rain and rough shape Round 2 at Philly Cricket Club

PHILADELPHIA, PA โ€” Friday at the Truist Championship was a fight, not between players, but against the elements.

Cold, wind, and persistent rain turned The Philadelphia Cricket Clubโ€™s Wissahickon Course into something closer to what fans expected this week โ€” a proper test of patience and precision.

Don’t get me wrong, the leaderboard is still stacked, but after 36 holes, it’s Keith Mitchell who is alone atop of the leaderboard at 12-under, following up Thursdayโ€™s record-setting 61 with a steady 67.

The 2019 Cognizant Classic champ now leads Shane Lowry by one shot and Sepp Straka by two heading into the weekend.

Keith Mitchell Goes Back-to-Back

After torching the course on Thursday, Mitchell showed some grit in Fridayโ€™s more difficult conditions. He didnโ€™t dazzle with fireworks, but he didnโ€™t need to.

He leaned on clean iron play and a hot putter โ€” he leads the field in Strokes Gained: Putting (+5.679) โ€” and got around Wissahickon with zero double bogeys for a second straight day. It’s his third career 36-hole lead and his first since 2021.

The question now is obviously if Keith Mitchell can close with Shane Lowry lurking…

Shane Lowry is making noise again. The Irishman matched Mitchellโ€™s Friday 67, backing up a Thursday 64 to sit just one back. Heโ€™s playing with precision โ€” just one bogey through 36 holes โ€” and seems perfectly suited for the rain-slicked conditions. Lowry already has two top-10s in Signature Events this year and is trending in a big way heading toward the PGA Championship.

Other Notables on the Move

  • Sepp Straka is solo third at -10, continuing a quietly strong season with his fourth potential top-10 finish. Heโ€™s looking to become the TOURโ€™s second multi-winner this season after McIlroy.
  • Rory McIlroy, Justin Thomas, and Collin Morikawa are all part of a massive logjam at T4 (-7). McIlroyโ€™s round was described as โ€œscrappyโ€ by the man himself, but he still signed for a 67 and sits just five back. Thomas remains razor-sharp with the irons. Morikawa cooled slightly after Thursdayโ€™s 63, but he’s very much in the hunt.
  • Patrick Cantlay and Si Woo Kim also join the -7 group after solid 68s. With weather continuing to play a factor, experience and course management will only become more important this weekend.

Weekend Outlook

With $3.6 million and 700 FedExCup points on the line, and a forecast calling for wind and chill, this weekend at Philly Cricket will separate the contenders from the pretenders. Donโ€™t be surprised if names like McIlroy, Lowry, or JT rise to the top.

Right now, Keith Mitchell has got the target on his back and in case youโ€™re wondering โ€” the crowds are dialed in, soaked or not. Philly shows up for big-time golf.
