Guardians Clobber Phillies 6-0: Aaron Nola labors on the mound as offense disappears
It was a tough night in Cleveland for the Phillies, as the Guardians launched three home runs and kept Philadelphia’s offense in check en route to a 6-0 shutout win to open the series.
Phillies Turn to Ghosts in Cleveland
Aaron Nola’s Rough 2025 Continues
Aaron Nola’s brutal season continued on Friday night.
Nola gave up six hits, three walks, and three earned runs over five innings. The big blow came in the fifth when Angel Martínez took him deep for a two-run shot, ballooning Cleveland’s lead to 3-0. Nola, now 1-6 on the season with an ERA north of 5, hasn’t pitched like the co-ace the Phillies are paying him to be.
The Guardians Kept It Simple: See Ball, Hit Ball, Go Yard
Cleveland’s offense didn’t waste chances. Kyle Manzardo opened the scoring with a solo blast in the fourth, his team-leading ninth homer of the season. Martínez followed with his two-run shot an inning later, and José Ramírez capped things off with a solo bomb in the seventh off Joe Ross. Ramírez just missed a homer the pitch before, then clobbered a hanging curve to put the Guardians up 6-0 for good.
Phillies’ Offense Goes Quiet
After stringing together some quality wins in Tampa, the Phillies couldn’t carry the momentum into Progressive Field. They were 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position and left nine men on base.
Trea Turner, Kyle Schwarber, and Alec Bohm all had opportunities to chip away but couldn’t capitalize. Gavin Williams pitched five solid innings for Cleveland, striking out eight and walking four, before handing it off to the bullpen for four scoreless frames.
What’s Next
The Phillies hand the ball to Ranger Suárez (0-0, 17.18 ERA) on Saturday in what will be just his second start of the year as he builds back from early season issues. Cleveland counters with Tanner Bibee (3-2, 4.26 ERA).
With the Guardians heating up and the Phillies looking flat in Game 1, Rob Thomson’s squad will need a bounce-back effort quickly to keep the weekend from spiraling.
