Straka, Lowry Share lead heading into the Final Round at the Truist Championship

Winds picked up, temperatures dropped, and the Wissahickon Course finally punched back. But even in Saturday’s swirling chaos at the Truist Championship, Sepp Straka and Shane Lowry stood tall.

Sepp Straka fired a composed 4-under 66 and Lowry followed with a 67, giving us a tie atop the leaderboard at 14 under heading into Sunday’s final round at the Philadelphia Cricket Club.

They’ll head out in the final group with one thing on their mind — a Signature Event title and a $3.6 million winner’s check.

Straka’s round was highlighted by five birdies, including a pair in the final four holes. But the moment of the day came at 18, where he buried a 16.5-footer for par to cap off a gritty performance in the wind.

Lowry, unfazed by the conditions, matched Straka’s birdie on the 489-yard 17th, keeping pace after a back-and-forth front nine that saw him and Keith Mitchell jockey for the lead.

Mitchell, the 36-hole leader, couldn’t hold on. His third-round 71 was marred by five bogeys, and despite four closing pars, he dropped into a tie for third at 11 under alongside Justin Thomas. JT was flying under the radar for most of the day until a late surge — birdies on 6, 7, 8 and 15 — vaulted him back into contention.

The round of the day? That belonged to Hideki Matsuyama, who carded a scorching 63 and sits just three shots back heading into Sunday.

Rory McIlroy Still Lurking

Defending champ Rory McIlroy never found a rhythm off the tee, hitting just three fairways, but scratched out a 1-under 69. He’s tied for seventh at 8 under, alongside Nick Taylor, Tony Finau, Sungjae Im, and Sam Burns. McIlroy will need a fast start — and cleaner ball-striking — if he’s going to chase down the leaders and add a fifth Truist title to his resume.

Truist Championship: Course Conditions Flip the Script

After 64 players broke par on Thursday, Saturday brought a very different flavor. Gusts up to 27 mph and dried-out greens turned the Wissahickon into a beast. The scoring average jumped, and with the wind swirling through the trees and narrow fairways, execution was at a premium.

History on Deck at the Truist Championship

In a nod to the club’s history, the par-3 14th will play just 95 yards on Sunday — the shortest non-major par 3 in the ShotLink era. It’s a tribute to the club’s St. Martins Course, which hosted the U.S. Open in 1907 and 1910. Expect some fun pins — and maybe a few hole-in-one attempts.

Notables Who Withdrew

Justin Rose, who won the U.S. Open at nearby Merion in 2013, withdrew after the second round with an illness. Michael Kim followed suit on Saturday due to a back injury.
