Michael Jordan plans to save the NBA media as he joins NBC as a ‘Special Contributor’

NBC Sports is returning to NBA coverage for the first time in over two decades, and they’re bringing the greatest player to ever live, Michael Jordan with them. Jordan will serve as a ‘special contributor’ once the network begins airing games again this Fall.

With that said, I’m making a hot take here. Just like he saved the NBA in the late 80’s into the early ’90’s, he will save basketball media as well. It’s time the way we talk about hoops is finally changed back to how it should be.

Jordan’s role was confirmed following NBC’s newly signed 11-year media rights agreement with the NBA, a deal that marks the network’s first involvement with the league since 2002. While specific details regarding Jordan’s appearances and contributions have not yet been announced, the move signals NBC’s intention to add real basketball credibility and insight to their broadcasts.

Michael Jordan joins NBC’s new NBA coverage this Fall

Let’s make one thing clear: Michael Jordan isn’t just the greatest basketball player of all time. He’s also a straight shooter. The man doesn’t sugarcoat, doesn’t bow down to popular narratives, and he sure as hell doesn’t care if your favorite player’s feelings get hurt.

You think Jordan’s gonna hop on air and praise a 20-point loss because a guy had a “fun highlights reel”? Please. This is the guy who once punched Steve Kerr in practice for being too soft. He built his legacy on being relentless, ruthless, and brutally honest. If you’re not living up to the standard—he’s going to tell you.

We may finally get Lebron James vs. Michael Jordan…

Imagine the television gold of watching Michael Jordan — the undisputed GOAT — break down LeBron James with raw, unfiltered honesty. Just Jordan calling it like he sees it. The same competitive fire that won him six rings could very well surface on NBC’s broadcast if the LeBron conversation comes up. And honestly? It wouldn’t be the least bit surprising if LeBron conveniently decided to hang it up just as MJ steps back into the NBA spotlight in this new role.

That’s a Lebron James move if I’ve ever seen one. Or better yet, Lebron would retire and then try to join forces with MJ to form a super media team. Tell me where the lie is there?

The NBA on NBC already brings the nostalgia. But now, with MJ in the building? It’s bringing the authenticity.

As a six-time NBA champion (6-0 in the NBA Finals), five-time MVP, and 14-time All-Star, Michael Jordan brings unmatched experience to the table. His voice will carry weight with both longtime fans and younger audiences, offering the perspective of someone who dominated the sport and remained connected through front-office roles and team ownership. Not to mention, this younger audience needs saved from all the nonsense coverage we’ve had over the last few years.

While it remains unclear how frequently Jordan will appear on NBC broadcasts or what format his contributions will take, his presence alone is expected to elevate the network’s coverage. For fans nostalgic for the era of “NBA on NBC” and the days when Jordan ruled the league, his involvement marks a promising return to thoughtful, high-level basketball commentary.

NBC is expected to roll out more details about its NBA broadcast team and programming in the months leading up to the 2025 season.
