Bryce Harper delivers, Phillies snap Cardinals’ 9-game streak in Game 1 of doubleheader

Bryce Harper came through in the clutch, delivering a two-out RBI single in the seventh inning to lift the Phillies to a gritty 2-1 win over the surging St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday afternoon at Citizens Bank Park.

Philadelphia had been stuck offensively most of the day, managing just three hits through six innings. As they’ve done so many times, they found a way when it mattered.

In the seventh, the Phillies strung together four singles off Cardinals reliever Steven Matz, with Bryson Stott tying the game on an infield hit before Bryce Harper gave the Phils the lead for good with career RBI number 999.

Jesus Luzardo was nails again, matching his season-high with seven strong innings. The lefty allowed just one run on five hits, striking out six to stay perfect on the season at 4-0. Jordan Romano shut the door in the ninth, striking out the side to lock down his fourth save.

The Cardinals’ lone run came off the bat of Jordan Walker, who stayed hot with an RBI knock. But that was all St. Louis could muster as their nine-game winning streak came to an end. Erick Fedde gave the Cardinals a solid start, tossing 5 2/3 scoreless innings, but the bullpen couldn’t hold it.

Key Moment: Marchan’s Helmet Saves the Day

A wild and quirky moment helped set the stage for Harper’s heroics. Phillies catcher Rafael Marchan appeared to be out at second trying to take an extra base, but upon video review, it was ruled that St. Louis second baseman Brendan Donovan had actually tagged Marchan’s helmet — which had fallen off — and not Marchan himself.

Marchan stayed on base and later scored the game-winner on Harper’s bloop single. Baseball, folks.

Key Stat: Schwarber’s On-Base Streak Snapped

In a rare quiet day, Kyle Schwarber saw his major league-leading 47-game on-base streak come to an end, going 0-for-4. It was the fourth-longest streak in Phillies history.

Phillies are back at it tonight

The Phillies and Cardinals will wrap up the doubleheader Wednesday night with Aaron Nola (1-6, 4.89 ERA) on the hill for Philly, looking to build some momentum. The Cardinals counter with Sonny Gray (4-1, 3.50 ERA).
