Eagles shake up front office, bring back former Jets GM Joe Douglas in a senior scouting role

Howie Roseman is getting the band back together. According to reports, former Jets general manager Joe Douglas is officially returning to the Philadelphia Eagles, taking on a senior scouting role within the front office.

It’s a reunion that makes perfect sense for both sides, especially with the Eagles needing to replenish a scouting department that’s seen several recent departures.

Eagles bring back familiar face in a front office shakeup, Joe Douglas is BACK

Joe Douglas, 48, previously served as the Eagles’ vice president of player personnel from 2016 to 2019. That tenure included one very important line on the résumé: helping build the roster that delivered Philly its first-ever Super Bowl win in February 2018.

This was Howie Roseman’s right-hand man during a stretch when the Eagles nailed veteran free-agent signings (Chris Long, LeGarrette Blount, Patrick Robinson), made savvy trades (Jay Ajayi, Tim Jernigan), and crushed a light-but-valuable 2018 draft class that produced Dallas Goedert, Josh Sweat, Avonte Maddox, Matt Pryor, and the ultimate long-term swing-for-the-fences pick: Jordan Mailata.

Joe Douglas left for the Jets GM job following the 2019 NFL Draft but couldn’t recreate the magic in New York. Despite holding the job for nearly five years, his teams never reached the playoffs and struggled to gain any consistent traction. He was fired in November 2024.

But this move isn’t about the Jets’ struggles. It’s about familiarity, institutional knowledge, and trusting someone who’s already proven he can help win in Philadelphia. Douglas will rejoin a front office already stacked with experienced personnel minds like former GMs Dave Caldwell (Jaguars) and Matt Russell (Broncos).

With scouting leaders like Brandon Hunt, Anthony Patch, and Jordan Dizon all departing for new jobs in the past few months, Roseman needed to bring in someone who could hit the ground running.

Joe Douglas fits that bill—and then some.

Don’t expect any turf battles either. The Eagles already have co-VPs of player personnel in Chuck Walls and Alan Wolking, each handling pro and college scouting, respectively. Douglas likely slots in as a senior personnel executive/assistant to the GM—similar to Caldwell and Russell.

In typical Eagles fashion, it’s a calculated, strategic move. It’s also another reminder that Roseman values relationships, results, and redemption arcs.

Joe Douglas helped build a champion once before in Philly. Now he’s back to see if lightning can strike again.
