Phillies win 8th straight, Zack Wheeler silences A’s, Trea Turner starts the fireworks early
Another day, another Phillies win.
Philadelphia took down the A’s 4-3 on Friday night in West Sacramento for their eighth straight victory, this time behind another dominant performance from Zack Wheeler and a three-hit night from Trea Turner, who led off the game with a home run.
The Phillies improved to 32-18, the best record in the National League, and continue to look like a complete machine on both sides of the ball.
Zack Wheeler’s Scoreless Streak Reaches 22.2 Innings
Zack Wheeler (6-1) is pitching like the ace of a World Series contender. He tossed 6.2 shutout innings, allowing just three hits while striking out eight.
His scoreless innings streak is now up to 22.2, and he’s recorded a 1.56 ERA over his last seven starts. The fastball command, the slider, the tempo—it’s all working.
Zack Wheeler: 6.2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 8 K
The Phillies pulled Wheeler after a pair of two-out walks in the seventh, and Orion Kerkering came in to strike out Luis Urías and keep the A’s off the board.
Since the start of April, Wheeler has posted a 1.56 ERA over his last seven starts. If the Cy Young voting happened today, it’s him and Jesús Luzardo fighting for the trophy — and they’re both Phillies.
Trea Turner Sets the Tone, Caps the Rally
Trea Turner opened the game with a leadoff homer and later capped a three-run ninth with an RBI single. He finished 3-for-5 and continues to destroy baseballs all month. In May, Turner’s hitting .341 with an .862 OPS, 45 hits, and 14 RBI. His return to form is a massive boost to an offense that already leads the NL in runs scored.
A Ninth-Inning Scare, But Another W
The Phillies were up 4-0 entering the bottom of the ninth, and it looked like a routine closeout for Jordan Romano. That changed when Nick Kurtz launched a three-run homer to cut it to 4-3, forcing Rob Thomson to call on Tanner Banks, who struck out Lawrence Butler for his first save of the year.

Defense Comes Up Big Again
The Phillies flashed the leather in a critical moment when Johan Rojas made a ridiculous tumbling catch at the center-field wall to end the eighth inning and strand a runner at third. It preserved the shutout and turned the lights out on any late-game A’s rally before it started.
Turner + Wheeler = Winning Baseball
The Phillies are playing complete, winning baseball right now. The top of the lineup is raking, the rotation is elite, and even with the bullpen missing José Alvarado, the staff continues to shut teams down. The A’s were the latest victim, now losers of 10 straight.
Up Next
Cristopher Sánchez (4-1, 3.10 ERA) takes the mound Saturday night as the Phillies look to make it nine straight. The A’s, now 8-43, haven’t announced a starter and continue to spiral toward irrelevance. The Phillies, meanwhile, are locked in and chasing 40 wins before June.
