Union finish undefeated May with frustrating scoreless draw in Dallas
The Union wrapped up a jam-packed month of May without a single loss — but Saturday night’s 0-0 draw at FC Dallas felt like a golden opportunity missed.
After Dallas went down to 10 men late in the first half, Philly had a full 50 minutes to press for three points but couldn’t find a way past Maarten Paes, who stood on his head in goal for the hosts.
Philadelphia Union finish month of May unbeaten
Still, it’s hard to be too mad about the result. The Union finish May unbeaten in nine matches across all competitions and remain top of the Eastern Conference and the Supporters’ Shield standings heading into the FIFA international break.
With the game state on Saturday, this one felt like two points dropped.
After Lalas Abubakar was sent off in the 39th minute, Philly dominated possession, outshooting Dallas 10-4 in the first half and piling up chances after the break. Jovan Lukic had the best look of the night, hammering a volley that forced a diving save from Paes. Bruno Damiani also smashed a header off the post early in the second half.
Over the final 20 minutes, the ball barely left Dallas’ defensive third — but despite seven shots down the stretch, the breakthrough never came.
And yes, the Union had to shuffle things yet again. Saturday marked their seventh different starting lineup in seven MLS games this month. Andrew Rick made his fifth start in goal, Ben Bender earned his first start in blue and gold, and Chris Donovan started up top alongside Mikael Uhre, who exited with an injury late in the first half.
Indiana Vassilev, Tai Baribo, and Quinn Sullivan all came off the bench to push for a winner, but it wasn’t Philly’s night in front of goal.
Big picture? Still a strong result. The Union closed out a grueling month with a 5-0-4 record and are firmly positioned as the team to beat in the East.
Next up, the squad gets a well-earned breather during the international break before hosting Liga MX side Atlas FC in a friendly at Subaru Park to kick off June.
When MLS play resumes the Union will need to be sharper in the final third — especially if they want to stay ahead of FC Cincinnati and Inter Miami in what’s shaping up to be a wild Supporters’ Shield race.
An undefeated May is nothing to sneeze at. Now it’s about keeping that level — and turning draws like this into wins down the stretch.
