Union shut out D.C. United, still can’t find back of the net in 0-0 draw
The Philadelphia Union played D.C. United at Subaru Park on Saturday night and the final score was 0-0. If you’re looking for excitement, this wasn’t it. If you’re looking for a reason to feel decent about this team’s defense, this was actually fine.
The Union outshot D.C. 17-6 and still couldn’t score. That pretty much tells you where this team is at offensively right now. Seventeen shots and zero goals. The chances were there. The finishing wasn’t. Same story we’ve seen too many times already this season.
Union vs D.C. United: 0-0
The bright spot is the clean sheet. The Union’s first of the year and Andre Blake’s 90th in his MLS career. That’s a ridiculous number for a guy who has been the backbone of this franchise for the better part of a decade.
Blake did his job. The defense held up. D.C. barely threatened all night and the Union have now gone 13 consecutive home matches unbeaten against D.C. United dating back to 2015. That’s a decade of dominance at Subaru Park against this team.
Still, a draw at home when you’re outshooting the opponent nearly 3-to-1 isn’t something to celebrate. It’s a point on the table and nothing more. This team needs to start putting the ball in the net or it’s going to be a long season regardless of how well Blake plays behind them.
Next up is Toronto FC on Wednesday, April 22nd at BMO Field. 7:30 p.m. ET on Apple TV.
