Jesus Luzardo Phillies Brewers Stats

Jesus Luzardo gave the perfect answer when asked why he changed his hairstyle

Jesus Luzardo had a great reason to switch up his hairstyle. When you give up 12 earned runs in 3 1/3 innings — and land yourself in the history books for all the wrong reasons — you’ve got to change something.

Three days after his disastrous start against the Brewers — which I covered in detail here — Luzardo showed up to the ballpark in Toronto on Tuesday rocking a brand-new set of cornrows.

When asked about the change, he didn’t sugarcoat it: “This is what happens when you give up 12 runs.”

Jesus Luzardo is now rocking cornrows

In case you missed it, Jesus Luzardo’s line from Saturday was one for the ages: 3 1/3 IP, 12 H, 12 R, 12 ER, 3 BB, 4 K — becoming just the 20th pitcher in MLB history to allow 12 earned runs in 4 innings or fewer. He also became the first Phillies pitcher to do it since Hal Kelleher in 1938.

Prior to that outing, Luzardo had been a Cy Young candidate with a 2.15 ERA. One bad start later, and it ballooned to 3.58.

Now he’s hoping the fresh look resets the vibes heading into Thursday’s start against the Blue Jays. Can’t blame him — after a meltdown like that, you either change your mechanics, your mindset… or your hair. Luzardo chose the latter.

Former Phillies reliever Jeff Hoffman is imploding in Toronto, while the Phillies bullpen continues to search for answers

We’ll see if the cornrows bring some new energy. If he goes out and deals on Thursday, maybe the whole Phillies staff will be booking appointments.

Catch up here: Jesus Luzardo destroys his season with historically bad outing.
