Knicks eyeing former 76ers assistant for vacant head coaching job
Former 76ers assistant coach Ime Udoka is reportedly on the New York Knicks’ radar as they begin their search to replace Tom Thibodeau.
After guiding the Houston Rockets to a 52-30 record and a second-place finish in the West, Udoka’s name is once again rising to the top of coaching candidate lists—even if prying him out of Houston feels like a long shot.
From 76ers Sideline to NBA Head Coach
Udoka’s journey to becoming one of the league’s most respected coaches included a critical stop in Philadelphia. During the 2019-2020 season, he served as Brett Brown’s lead assistant with the 76ers. It was a short stint, but an important one. His work behind the scenes—particularly on the defensive side and in player development—earned high praise from veterans like Joel Embiid and helped bolster his credentials for a future head coaching gig.
After Philadelphia, Udoka spent time in Brooklyn before landing the Boston Celtics job. A team policy violation cut that tenure short, but it didn’t slow down his coaching stock. He’s since rebuilt his reputation in Houston, leading a young Rockets team to the playoffs and proving he belongs in the upper echelon of NBA coaches.
Knicks Could Come Calling—But Will Udoka Listen?
So far, there’s no indication Udoka is looking to leave Houston, and the Knicks’ current list of dream candidates—including Jason Kidd and Jay Wright—feels a bit ambitious. Still, the fact that Udoka is being mentioned shows how valuable his 76ers experience and coaching pedigree remain in league circles.
Whether he stays in Houston or gets courted by New York, Udoka’s time in Philadelphia clearly played a role in shaping the coach he’s become. And for 76ers fans, it’s always a little validating to see the league continue to tap into Philly’s coaching tree.
