Phillies Losing Streak

The Phillies are in a tailspin and the numbers are absolutely disgusting

The Phillies just got swept by the Pirates — and now they’ve lost nine of their last ten. It’s been ugly. It’s been hideous. It’s been the kind of baseball that makes you wonder what happened to the team that looked unstoppable just a few weeks ago.

The Phillies have lost 9 of their last 10 games:

The Phillies’ losing streak shows that fans aren’t built like they used to be >>

The Phillies have been really bad since the May 29th doubleheader vs Atlanta:

  • 3.18 runs scored per game — 23rd in MLB
  • 5.82 runs allowed per game — 4th most
  • .292 opponent batting average — 3rd highest
  • 3.78 opponent walks per 9 innings — 7th highest
  • .201 team batting average — dead last
  • .264 team on-base percentage — tied for worst
  • .331 slugging percentage — 27th
  • .237 BABIP (batting average on balls in play) — worst in MLB
  • 72 hits total — 17th
  • 22.3% strikeout rate — middle of the pack (15th)
  • 6.9% walk rate — 26th

Bryce Harper shared a very concerning update on his wrist injury Saturday >>

And it’s not like the bullpen is helping. The relievers are running a 4.57 ERA with three blown saves during this stretch. Opposing hitters are batting .276 against Phillies relievers, with a .357 OBP — not exactly shutting it down.

Even worse, they’ve allowed eight of 15 inherited runners to score, which is the third-worst mark in baseball over that stretch.

If you’re looking for a silver lining, the defense has actually been fine — just three errors and a .992 fielding percentage (7th best in MLB). Of course, solid defense only matters so much when your offense can’t score and your bullpen can’t hold a lead.

And then there’s the classic Phillies problem: the chase rate. Even though it’s been better this year overall, over this skid it’s back to being awful.

A 32.5% chase rate — worse than everyone except the Rockies and Red Sox.

They’ve chased 247 pitches outside the zone and made contact just 58.3% of the time. That’s 103 whiffs on pitches they shouldn’t even be swinging at. You want to talk about beating yourself? That’s it.

It’s really bad, so what now?

Is the real Phillies team the one that ripped through the Dodgers, Cubs, Nats, Diamondbacks, Rays, and Guardians, winning series left and right or is it this current version getting slapped around by the Pirates and looking completely lifeless at the plate?

Swept in Pittsburgh: Phillies dropped fifth straight game, falling 2-1 to the Pirates >>

The Phillies’ schedule isn’t going to do them any favors.

Coming up they’ve got the Cubs, Blue Jays, Marlins, Mets, Astros, Braves, and Padres — five of those seven teams are over .500.

The anti-Dave Dombrowski crowd getting louder.

There’s frustration that the Phillies didn’t do more this offseason. Dombo managed to keep the team competitive without selling off prospects, but the timelines don’t really line up.

Guys like Aidan Miller, Justin Crawford, and other young prospects are years away from being everyday contributors and when those days finally arrive, the Phillies will still paying Bryce Harper, Trea Turner, and Aaron Nola $20+ million each.

So what’s the plan? Push all in and actually make a run with this core or are we going back to dumpster diving at the deadline to find a few middle relievers, and call it good?

We’re about to find out real quick.
