Barry Sanders delivers strong message to Saquon Barkley on retirement talk

While it’s entirely up to Saquon Barkley, because at the end of the day it’s his life and his career, when he floated around the idea last week that he could see himself retiring out of nowhere, I couldn’t help but strongly disagree with that mindset myself.

Now, just to be clear he wasn’t saying it would necessarily be anytime soon, but the fact this is even a talking point right now, selfishly concerns me. Barkley just had one of the greatest seasons we’ve ever seen from a running back, joined this Philadelphia Eagles team and franchise, and is finally playing behind an elite offensive line. We talking about retirement right now? Why?

Luckily, Barry Sanders, one of best running backs of all time and someone who appeared to prematurely retire from the NFL had a conversation with Saquon Barkley about this.

Saquon Barkley on retirement

Barry Sanders chimed in on these comments given the similarities between the two:

“I’d say maybe after the Lions win a Super Bowl,” Sanders said in an interview with CBS Sports, barely suppressing a grin. “And I feel like the Eagles have a chance to win another one. So yeah…he should stick around for a little while.”

Barry knows a thing or two about walking away too early. He stunned the entire football world when he retired at 31, still in his prime, just 1,457 yards shy of breaking Walter Payton’s all-time rushing record. And while that decision carved Sanders into football mythology, even he wouldn’t recommend that path to a guy like Saquon — not with the way things are going in Philly.

“As a fan, I’m enjoying watching him play,” Sanders continued. “He was written off by the Giants, and to see what he did last year? Man, I know he still has a lot of great years left in him.”

Let’s not forget the facts. Barkley, 28, just had a season straight out of Madden. Not only did he become the ninth player in NFL history to rush for 2,000 yards in a regular season — joining the same elite club as Sanders himself — he also shattered Terrell Davis’ total season rushing record with 2,504 yards when you factor in the playoffs. Oh, and he won a Super Bowl and a rushing title in the same season.

And after all that (Karl-Anthony Towns voice) Saquon Barkley is projecting towards retirement?

Barry gets it though. He knows that kind of thinking creeps in during the offseason. You’re sore, you’re mentally worn down, and you’ve got every talking head in the country dissecting your every move.

“Sometimes players feel that way in the offseason,” Sanders said. “Then you get into camp, the juices get flowing, and it all changes. Philly feels like a great home for him. Hopefully this is just a temporary mindset.”

Spoiler alert: It is.

Barkley shut it all down this week at Eagles minicamp.

“I don’t think I’ll ever lose the passion for the game,” he told reporters. “I don’t plan on retiring any time soon. That whole thing kind of caught fire on social media. The question was asked, and I answered honestly. But nah, no plans to walk away.”

He added, “I’d love to play this game as long as God and my body let me.”

There it is. That’s the Saquon we need. Not the guy flirting with a farewell tour after finally escaping the New York football wasteland. Philly gave him new life. He’s got a chip on his shoulder, a real chance to cement his legacy, and most importantly — a team around him.

We’ve got more hardware to acquire here in Philadelphia in the form of Lombardi Trophies, MVP’s, Rushing Titles, defensive player of the year, I really don’t care. I want all the awards coming to the Philadelphia Eagles. We’re the gold standard of the NFL baby.

So, we need a locked in Saquon Barkley to go back out there next season and prove it. Fly Eagles Fly.
