Otto Kemp Spark Plug

Otto Kemp has arrived and the Phillies cannot send him back to Lehigh Valley

About a month ago, Otto Kemp was making noise in Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Not the loudest voice in the Phillies’ farm system, but steady, productive, and impossible to ignore.

The problem was there just wasn’t a clear path to the big leagues. That obviously changed once Bryce Harper hit the IL, opening the door for Otto Kemp to get the call to The Show.

Otto Kemp didn’t just open the door, he blew it off the hinges.

Since getting called up last week, Kemp has done nothing but rake. He followed a 3-for-5 outing that helped the Phillies survive extra innings against the Cubs with a 2-for-4 performance in a shutout of Toronto.

Then on Sunday, he went 4-for-5 and helped Philly complete a three-game sweep of the Blue Jays. In total: eight games, .345 average, .387 OBP, five runs, four RBIs, and a spark that helped the Phillies snap out of a June funk and win five of six on the homestand.

Regardless, Kemp already has Citizens Bank Park behind him. South Philly loves a grinder, and Kemp plays like a guy who’s been scraping and clawing to get here his whole life which makes sense because that’s exactly how things unfolded.

“A lot of energy,” manager Rob Thomson said after Sunday’s 11-4 win. “He’s had great at-bats… it just creates some energy in the clubhouse because guys are excited for him.”

It’s showing. The Phillies have scored 37 runs during this recent six-game tear, and Kemp has been right in the middle of it.

He’s splitting time at first and third base and showing a knack for timely hitting — like the low-and-away 0-2 breaker he flipped into left field Sunday to drive in two. That wasn’t a lucky poke. That was a guy in rhythm, covering the plate like a pro.

“They’ve been really good with me,” Kemp said on the NBC Sports Philly postgame show. “Just trying to be a table-setter for these guys.”

The Otto Kemp Dilemma

When Harper comes back, he takes over first base. Kemp could slide over to third, but that’s Alec Bohm’s spot. And while Bohm’s cooled off lately, he’s still too good to bench. So what do you do with Otto Kemp?

You find a spot. Maybe it’s second base. Maybe it’s a corner outfield role. Maybe it’s the bench, though Kemp’s playing like he deserves better than that.

At this point, the Phillies don’t have a choice. The kid’s made himself too valuable.

Otto Kemp wasn’t the prospect fans were clamoring for but he’s the guy who showed up, filled a gap, and got hot at the right time. That’s how playoff teams stay hot through the summer.

He’s undeniable now.
