Trea Turner sets the tone, Mick Abel shoves, Phillies win fifth straight in Miami
The Phillies are back to business, and Trea Turner made sure everyone knew it from the jump on Monday night in Miami.
Turner crushed the second pitch of the game for a leadoff homer, and the Phillies never looked back in a 5-2 win over the Marlins. It was Turner’s 18th career leadoff blast and his second this season and the latest example of just how valuable he’s been at the plate for The Fightins this season.
Trea Turner Leadoff Home Run
Max Kepler added a solo homer of his own in the fourth, Alec Bohm came through with a two-run single in the ninth, and Mick Abel continued to settle in nicely as a big-league starter. The 23-year-old rookie scattered three hits over five innings, allowing just one run and striking out three to earn his second win in four starts.
It wasn’t just the bats and the starter, either. Bryson Stott delivered the defensive moment of the night — a full-extension grab with the bases loaded in the second inning that stopped a potential big inning in its tracks.
Unfortunately for Stott, he reportedly hyperextended his elbow last night and his status for tonight’s game in Miami is now in question. More on that later, here.
It was the kind of play that doesn’t show up in the box score the same way, but saved at least two runs in the moment and helped the Phillies keep control of the game. Orion Kerkering shut the door in the ninth, working a perfect frame for his first career save.
With the win, the Phillies extended their streak to five games and improved to 43-29, keeping pace in the NL East while Bryce Harper remains sidelined. This group keeps finding ways to win and the contributions are from up and down the lineup which shows the kind of balance that should scare teams come July.
Up Next for the Phillies:
Jesús Luzardo takes the mound Tuesday night, looking to build off his dominant bounce-back outing last week. He’ll be opposed by Cal Quantrill, who enters with a 5.61 ERA for the Marlins.
Philadelphia has a chance to keep rolling with three more in Miami before a massive showdown at home this weekend against the New York Mets.
